What was your first job as a journalist?

In school, writing for my HS newspaper. Professionally, working at the Cap Times in Madison, WI.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

yes, in college and at the now-defunct Auckland Star in New Zealand in the mid 1980s.

William Boot.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be on a never-ending quest for the truth... and good beer.

Why did you become a journalist?

Basically lived in student newspaper newsrooms throughout college.

Stories where I helped people.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Work hard. Don't be too in love with technology. Focus on the fundamentals.
