Season Preview: A position-by-position breakdown of the 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs kick off their season this Wednesday against the Montreal Canadiens, and while John Tavares and Timothy Liljegren are expected to miss some time, we’ll have a chance to see close to the full lineup in action. While the star players remain the same, the Leafs added two new goaltenders, plenty of depth forwards, and will now benefit from a full season of Mark Giordano. On paper, this team looks as strong as ever.
Maple Leafs sign F McMann to two-way, two-year deal - TSN.ca
TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed forward Bobby McMann to a two-year, two-way future contract with an average annual value of US$762,500. McMann, 25, has 35 points in 60 games with the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies this season. His 24 goals are a franchise record for a rookie. The native of Wainwright, Alta., also suited up for four games with the ECHL's Newfoundland Growlers this season, scoring twice and adding two assists.
Official trade details: Maple Leafs acquire winger Colin Blackwell, trade two seconds and a third to Seattle in Mark Giordano deal
The official trade details are now known on the Maple Leafs’ acquisition of Mark Giordano: They will also add winger Colin Blackwell to the fold while shipping a 2022 second-round pick, a 2023 second-round pick, and a 2024 third-round pick to the Kraken. Seattle retained half of Giordano’s $6.75 million contract that expires at the end of the season.
A comprehensive list of 2022 trade deadline targets for the Maple Leafs
At any NHL trade deadline, playoff teams tend to trade with non-playoff teams, and while we do see the odd exception, it’s a safe bet that any trade the Maple Leafs will make will be with one of the sellers. With the Dallas Stars, Nashville Predators, and Edmonton Oilers fighting for two playoff spots in the Western Conference, let’s assume that they won’t be trading roster players for futures.
Why the Maple Leafs may need more than just a defenseman
After losing to Buffalo and Vancouver this week by a combined score of 11-5, one thing is clear: The Maple Leafs have some serious work to do. Toronto’s second line has underperformed, their fourth line is purposeless, their defense gives up too many chances, and their goaltending has been a nightmare for well over a month now. Even if they add a decent defenseman like Josh Manson, we probably won’t have to start planning a parade any time soon.
Jakob Chychrun is set to become the most valuable player traded at this year’s deadline. The 23-year old is signed for the next three and a half seasons at a cap hit of $4.6 million, which is an absolute bargain. You’re trading for four prime years of a legitimate top-four defenseman, one with the upside to potentially be in the Team Canada conversation for the next best-on-best competition.
Nick Robertson continues point-a-game pace, Toronto Marlies' comeback falls short in overtime loss to Belleville
Prior to the break, the Toronto Marlies appeared to have ironed out the slow starts that plagued them in many of their losses in the first half of the season. Unfortunately, their reverting to old habits when it comes to not starting on time was the reason for the team’s back-to-back losses to Belleville over the weekend, including this 5-4 overtime loss on Saturday. “The starts were a strength of ours for a while there,” said Greg Moore. “We will have to hit the reset and discuss it as a group.
Analysis: Maple Leafs acquire Ilya Lyubushkin and Ryan Dzingel from Arizona in exchange for Nick Ritchie and a 2025 conditional second-round pick
The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin and forward Ryan Dzingel from the Arizona Coyotes. Nick Ritchie is headed to Arizona along with a conditional second-round pick. The Coyotes will have their choice between the Leafs‘ second-round selection in 2025 or their third-round selection in 2023. Lyubushkin, 27, is a 6’2″ right-shooting defenseman who plays a physical style.
Leafs Report Cards: Thatcher Demko robs the Buds with 51-save performance in Vancouver
Tonight’s edition of Hockey Night in Canada gave us our first Leafs vs. Canucks matchup of the season. In Toronto’s first look at the Bruce Boudreau era in Vancouver, fans were also able to get a good look at trade candidates like J.T. Miller and Luke Schenn.
Ice Chips: Maple Leafs recall Joey Anderson and Kirill Semyonov
2h ago TSN.ca Staff Joey Anderson , Toronto Marlies on Twitter Keep updated on all the injury news and roster updates from around the NHL with daily Ice Chips. Toronto Maple Leafs Forwards Joey Anderson and Kirill Semyonov have been recalled by the Maple Leafs from the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies. In 53 National Hockey League games, Anderson has eight goals and 13 points. This is Semyonov's first call up to the NHL. This season with the Marlies, Semyonov has one goal and nine assists.
Who could replace Zach Hyman on the Maple Leafs? Breaking down the free agent and trade options
Who among us isn’t a big fan of Zach Hyman? With the work ethic, speed, forechecking ability, and strength that make him a force to be reckoned with, the Toronto native has been a valuable contributor for parts of six seasons. It’s clear that this is a good player who will be difficult to replace. The Leafs can technically afford to keep Hyman if they would like to do so.
Leafs Mailbag: Offseason Priorities, bargain-bin UFAs, and what to do with Morgan Rielly?
After collecting Twitter questions last week, it’s time to tuck into some mailbag Q&A with the NHL offseason now possibly just hours away from officially getting underway. Thanks to everyone who took the time to submit a question! What do you think of the Wayne Simmonds signing? First off, I’m glad that he signed for $900k this time around rather than the $1.5 million he signed for last offseason.
Who will be the Toronto Maple Leafs' second goalie next season? Breaking down the free agent options
The Maple Leafs are bound to add a goalie this offseason, whether through free agency or trade. Both Frederik Andersen and David Rittich are set to hit free agency, and there isn’t an NHL-ready goalie prospect on the Marlies. Jack Campbell is the clear starter heading into next season, but he’s yet to play 40 games in an NHL season. The Leafs will certainly need a strong backup option. Toronto’s front office will need to determine how much they are willing to spend on the goaltending position.
It's put up or shut up time for the Toronto Maple Leafs' core
The Leafs should be embarrassed about last night’s game. The team’s effort was completely unacceptable. Coming up short in overtime is one thing, but not showing up for the first 50 minutes of the game was pathetic. It’s absolutely inexcusable to fail to start on time. The Leafs came out flat in Game 1 against Columbus last year. They came out flat once again with their backs against the wall in Game 4, and a late rally was the only thing that got them to the fifth and deciding game.
Toronto Maple Leafs Trade Deadline Thoughts: On Nick Foligno, Riley Nash, David Rittich, and Ben Hutton
The dust has now settled on the busiest trade deadline for the Toronto Maple Leafs in recent franchise history. In came Nick Foligno, David Rittich, Ben Hutton, Stefan Noesen, and Antti Suomela. Out went six draft picks, plus Alex Barabanov. Let’s dive right into some initial thoughts. Nick Foligno Photo: NHLI via Getty Images An easy player to root for, Nick Foligno is a defensively responsible forward who makes the Leafs a better team.

A Look at the Top 2020-21 NHL Free Agents Left on the Market – Overtime Heroics
GLENDALE, ARIZONA - MARCH 09: Michael Grabner #40 of the Arizona Coyotes celebrates after scoring a short-handed goal against the Los Angeles Kings during the first period of the NHL game at Gila River Arena on March 09, 2019 in Glendale, Arizona. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images) The NHL Trade Deadline is just around the corner. Most people are focused on the players set to be traded (which, of course, is fair).
Marlies Sign NCAA FA Brennan Kapcheck – Overtime Heroics
FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA - MARCH 29: Brennan Kapcheck #8 of the American International Yellow Jackets scores against David Hrenak #34 of the St. Cloud State Huskies during an NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey West Regional Championship Semifinal game at Scheels Arena on March 29, 2019 in Fargo, North Dakota. Maple Leafs Sign NCAA FA Alex Steeves – Overtime Heroics
ANN ARBOR, MI - NOVEMBER 10: Notre Dame Fighting Irish forward Alex Steeves (16) skates with the puck during a regular season Big 10 Conference hockey game between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Michigan Wolverines on November 10, 2018 at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (Photo by Scott W. Grau/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that they have signed Alex Steeves of the University of Notre Dame to a three-year entry-level contract.
The Return of Ian Scott – Overtime Heroics
After almost two years away due to injury, Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Ian Scott has made his return. The team has loaned him to their NHL taxi squad to be their 3rd goaltender amid Frederik Andersen’s injury. There’s a good chance that some people didn’t even realize he was gone. Let’s break down this situation. Who is Ian Scott? Ian Scott was drafted 114th overall in 2017 by the Toronto Maple Leafs, lower than many expected him to go. He was the 11th of 21 goalies selected that year.
On Mattias Ekholm, Mikael Granlund, Taylor Hall, and Toronto Maple Leafs' Deadline Decisions
It sure seems like the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to make a trade in the near future. There are about seven weeks left until the end of the regular season, and at this point, we have to assume that the player they acquire will have to go through a 14-day quarantine period. They will want to get any player accustomed to their system. Given how busy their schedule is in April, they’d have a tough time playing with a shortened roster.
Maple Leafs Trade Mikko Lehtonen, Acquire Veini Vehviläinen – Overtime Heroics
The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded defenseman Mikko Lehtonen to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for goaltender Veini Vehviläinen. I… did not see this coming. Let’s take a closer look. Mikko Lehtonen I’m not gonna pretend that Mikko Lehtonen is bad. He is a very good grab for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Lehtonen came out of the KHL as a super highly-touted free agent. In just his first season in the KHL, he dominated, leading all KHL defensemen in goals, assists, and points.
In defense of Frederik Andersen
The Toronto Maple Leafs are now 18-7-2 despite suffering three straight regulation losses for the first time in the Sheldon Keefe era. They looked a little bit tired in the first game against the Canucks — the second half of a back-to-back — and they ran into two great goalie performances on Saturday and Tuesday. They still sit in the top six in both 5-on-5 shooting percentage and 5-on-5 save percentage, but it felt like this was bound to happen eventually.
Why the Toronto Maple Leafs should make a push for Taylor Hall before the trade deadline
After shocking the hockey world by signing in Buffalo on a one-year, $8 million contract last October, Taylor Hall is set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season. Based on how things are playing out in Buffalo, it seems likely that Hall will be traded. A big extension does not appear to be overly likely at this point.
The Toronto Maple Leafs' biggest X-Factor, possible lineup tweaks, and standouts on the Marlies
Life is good at the top of the NHL standings for the Toronto Maple Leafs. In this Sunday edition of Leafs Musings, we’ll cover Joe Thornton’s impact and long-term lineup fit, some possible lineup changes/experiments, the latest with the 4-4-0 Toronto Marlies, and check in with a quick note on potential deadline target, Mikael Granlund, in the final thoughts at the end. Toronto’s Biggest X-Factor Photo: Nathan Denette/Canadian Press The biggest X-factor on any team is always the goalie.
Exploring the prospects of a Filip Forsberg trade to the Toronto Maple Leafs
Now 14-3-2 through 19 games, the Toronto Maple Leafs are the best team in the Canadian division, and they won’t have to play an American team unless/until they reach the Conference Finals. Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner are dominating. John Tavares isn’t getting any younger. The team hasn’t won a playoff round since 2004, a slump every Leafs fan on the planet wants to end this year. It’s time to make a move. It’s time to acquire a player who can be a major difference maker in the playoffs.
Toronto Marlies Sign Dakota Krebs To ATO – Overtime Heroics

(Photo by Marissa Baecker/Getty Images) The Toronto Marlies have added defenseman Dakota Krebs of the University of Calgary on an amateur tryout. Who is Dakota Krebs? Dakota Krebs’ last name might sound familiar to some.
Thoughts on the Alex Galchenyuk Trade, the Meltdown Against Ottawa & the Marlies 2-0 start
In case you have been living under a rock, the Toronto Maple Leafs acquired forward Alex Galchenyuk from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for forward Egor Korshkov and defenseman David Warsofsky on Monday. Given that Galchenyuk passed through waivers earlier this week, the acquisition cost was bound to be low.
Analysis: Maple Leafs Trade for Alex Galchenyuk – Overtime Heroics
The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that they’ve acquired forward Alex Galchenyuk from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for prospect Yegor Korshkov and AHL veteran David Warsofsky. For such a seemingly minor trade, there’s a lot that goes into this. Let’s get into it. Alex Galchenyuk: Toronto’s Latest Project Alex Galchenyuk has had what can only be described as a tough few seasons.

WINDSOR, ON - SEPTEMBER 27: Goaltender Tristan Lennox #30 of the Saginaw Spirit skates prior to a game against the Windsor Spitfires on September 27, 2018 at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Dennis Pajot/Getty Images) The Toronto Marlies have added top 2021 NHL Draft prospect Tristan Lennox to their roster ahead of the 2021 AHL season. The signing is interesting because, well, we haven’t really seen players come into the AHL for their draft year.
The Toronto Maple Leafs Through 11 Games: What's Working and What's Not Working
The Toronto Maple Leafs are 8-2-1 through 11 games, thanks largely to their red-hot power play. Before we dive in any deeper, let’s quickly acknowledge that it’s great to have 17 points through 11 games. No team wants to think about the possibility of missing the playoffs. Banking points early is crucial in a shortened season, where there is less time to make up ground. When it comes to making the playoffs or winning the division, they don’t ask how you got your points. They just ask how many.
Leafs Injury Report: Campbell Injury, LTIR, and More – Overtime Heroics
CALGARY, AB - JANUARY 24: Johnny Gaudreau #13 of the Calgary Flames takes a shot against Jack Campbell #36 of the Toronto Maple Leafs during an NHL game at Scotiabank Saddledome on January 24, 2021 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. (Photo by Derek Leung/Getty Images) The Toronto Maple Leafs have had their fair share of injuries already. In this Leafs Injury Report, we’ll take a look at what the Leafs are currently dealing with throughout the system.
Early thoughts on the 2021 Toronto Maple Leafs, Position by Position
It’s sure nice to have Leafs hockey back, and it’s even better when they get off to a 4-2 start to the season. I can’t say that it’s been a perfect beginning to the season for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but improving defensively was long overdue and there is time to figure things out in the offensive end. The power play is converting at a 44% rate and they’re a top-10 team at limiting shot attempts against at 5-on-5, so there are certainly some positives to build on here.
Toronto Maple Leafs Cut 14 from Camp Roster – Overtime Heroics
Toronto, ON- January 9 - Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Teemu Kivihalme (45) battles with Toronto Maple Leafs center Travis Boyd (72) as the Toronto Maple Leafs hold their annual Blue versus White inter-squad game at ScotiaBank Arena in Toronto. January 9, 2021.

The Six Toronto Maple Leafs prospects competing
The World Junior Hockey Championships have been a staple of the holiday season for decades. Given that there hasn’t been NHL hockey for several months now, I’m looking forward to this tournament even more than usual. Let’s take a look at who could win the gold at this year’s event as well as the six prospects participating from the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. Team Canada Canada’s Kirby Dach On paper, Canada is a dominant team with questionable goaltending.
Hockey Update: 12/05/2020
It’s been a while, NHL hockey’s still gone, but that isn’t stopping news from breaking around the sport. Here, I’ll do my best to cover news from around the hockey world. After a long break, here’s today’s new and improved Hockey Update. Labour Disputes/Season Start It looks as if the tension between the NHL and NHLPA has calmed.
Utah Grizzlies Sign Denis Smirnov
The Utah Grizzlies have signed Denis Smirnov out of Penn State University for the 2020-21 season. Who is Denis Smirnov Drafted: Colorado Avalanche, 156th overall in 2017 Age: Turned 23 on August 12th Position: Winger Height: 5’9 Weight: 185 lbs 2019-20: Penn State University of the NCAA (Big Ten), 31 games, 8 goals, 11 assists, 6 PIM, 7 Denis Smirnov is someone that jumps out to me as a very interesting prospect.
Turner Diagnosis Raises Tough Questions for MLB
What should’ve been a celebratory moment for the Los Angeles Dodgers and a show of success for MLB quickly turned sour on Tuesday. Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner tested positive for COVID-19 and had to be pulled out mid-game. Even with the season over, it raises some tough questions for Major League Baseball. What the Hell? What Happened? Even after playing the season in a “bubble”, MLB faced a positive test… during the biggest game of the season.
Evaluating the Toronto Maple Leafs' performance at the 2020 NHL Draft
The Toronto Maple Leafs did well at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. I’m not here to tell you that all 12 of their picks are bound to be NHL stars, but I liked each of their first seven picks, something I certainly can’t say the same about many other teams. I’ll touch on the Rodion Amirov pick at the end, but the majority of this article will be on their next six picks, as I already wrote about why I liked the Amirov pick here.
Leafs Sign Ilya Mikheyev to Two-Year Extension
The Toronto Maple Leafs have extended forward Ilya Mikheyev to a two-year deal with a 1.645 million dollar AAV. Ilya Mikheyev in Toronto After very solid performances in the KHL, Ilya Mikheyev signed an entry-level deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019. In Toronto, Mikheyev got off to a surprisingly good start. After netting a goal and an assist in his debut, Mikheyev became a lock in Toronto’s top-nine, making appearances in the top-six. And then tragedy struck.
Rochester Americans Sign Ryan Jones
The Rochester Americans have signed Ryan Jones out of the University of Nebraska for the 2020-21 AHL season. Ryan Jones Scouting Report Drafted: Pittsburgh Penguins, 121st overall in 2016 Age: Turned 24 on May 26th Position: LD Height: 6’2 Weight: 185 lbs 2019-20: University of Nebraska-Omaha of the NCAA (NCHC), 36 games, 2 goals, 9 assists, 37 PIM, -6 When Ryan Jones was picked in 2016, it came as a bit of a surprise. At the time, he was 20 years old and still playing in the USHL.
Marlies Make Splash, Sign Four
The Toronto Marlies have announced that they’ve signed forwards Rourke Chartier, Scott Sabourin, and Tyler Gaudet to one-year AHL deals for the 2020-21 season. In addition, they’ve re-signed Rich Clune for the 2020-21 AHL season. Some very interesting moves here, let’s get into it! Rourke Chartier I’ve been speculating about signing Rourke Chartier for a very long time now.
Joe Thornton signing, the odd man out, and the next steps
What an active week — and offseason overall — it’s been for Kyle Dubas and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
