1. Introduction Many regional Australian universities are challenged by high attrition rates, particularly in the first year of study (Naylor, Chi, & Arkoudis, 2018; Seidel & Kutieleh, 2017). An examination of first-year units in the School of Education (SoE) at the University of New England, a regional university in Australia, between 2016 to 2020 identified early withdrawal in first-year units ranged between 5.2% to 41.1%.
