Iowa sees more heavy rain for July 4. See the totals

July 4, 2026, 8:38 a.m. CT When it rains, it pours. A day after parts of Iowa were dumped on with more than a foot of rain, another overnight storm splashed us again. How much rain did Des Moines get? Des Moines saw another 2.87 inches from 7 a.m. July 3 to 7 a.m. July 4. Much of that rain — 1.49 inches — fell between 7 p.m. July 3 and 7 a.m. July 4. Over the last two days, Des Moines has received 5.05 inches of rain, according to Iowa Environmental Mesonet.

Updated July 3, 2026, 1:17 p.m. CT Finally, some rain to beat down the heat — just in time for what could be a stormy holiday weekend. How much rain did Des Moines get? Des Moines saw 3.56 inches from 9 a.m. July 2 to 9 a.m. July 3. Most of that rain — 3.42 inches — fell between 9 p.m. July 2 and 9 a.m. July 3. Ames saw the most rain in Iowa during that 24-hour window, with 4.39 inches recorded. Ankeny saw a little more than Des Moines, with 3.75 inches.

July 3, 2026, 7:21 a.m. CT The National Weather Service has issued an updated flood warning for the Des Moines area. What: Low lying, urban area, and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. Where: A portion of central Iowa, including the following counties, Dallas, Jasper and Polk. When: Until 5:15 p.m. Friday. Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring.
