When I was 12, my school bus pulled up each morning to John Adams Junior High School in Charleston. It was the fall of 1974, and outside the school's entrance stood mothers carrying handmade signs that read, "Get the Devil Books Out of Our Schools" and "I Have a Bible. I Don't Need Those Dirty Textbooks." I remember wondering what "dirty textbooks" could possibly mean. Were they really going to have us reading Playboy in school?

When I first became familiar with Jim Lewis in the 1970s, I didn’t really know him at all. I knew his children. I knew his reputation. And in Charleston back then, I understood — in a 12-year-old’s way — that reputation carried weight.

After James Talarico won the Democratic nomination for a U.S. Senate race in Texas, I started watching more of him online — clips from the Texas legislature, interviews and eventually a sermon he delivered at his home church in Austin in October 2023. It didn’t come off as a campaign speech, but as an actual sermon. That distinction matters.
