A Journey in Spring (Chun Xing)
QUICK AND DIRTY: LIVE FROM SAN SEBASTIAN Khim-Hok (Jieh-Wen King) is an old man of very few words. He lives with his wife Tuan (Kuei-Mei Yang) on a quiet house high on the Taiwanese mountains. They have to climb a very long staircase before entering the highly isolated dwelling. The weather is almost invariably misty, and the landscape is lush green, covered with a thick rainforest vegetation. A bucolic waterfall adds the final touch of detachment to the environment.
The Oceans Are the Real Continents (Los Océanos son Los Verdaderos Continentes)
QUICK AND DIRTY: LIVE FROM VENICE Tommaso Santambrogio’s first feature film (presumably a continuation of his eponymous 2019 short) is as close as it gets to a documentary, without being promoted as such. The five lead actors play fictionalised versions of themselves, carrying out their duties as they normally would. The action takes place in the Cuban town of San Antonio de los Banos, home to the prestigious International School of Cinema and Television, where the director once studied.
Our dirty questions to Tsai Ming-Liang
Having been a huge fan of the 65-year-old director – perhaps the most prominent LGBT+ filmmaker in Asia and certainly one of the biggest exponents of slow cinema in the world -, I couldn’t wait to meet Tsai Ming-liang in person. I first watched The River (1997) when I was still a teenager in my native Brazil while working at the Sao Paulo Film Festival, in the year then film was originally launched. Ming-liang’s tender and subversive sensibility shocked and moved me profoundly.

Tsai Ming-liang: Chasing the Film Spirit
The director of Goodbye, Dragon Inn recalls his relationship to cinema, onscreen and off. Goodbye, Dragon Inn screens at Metrograph until January 9 and At Home through January 31. Tsai directing Goodbye, Dragon Inn Since early on, there has been a persistent, mysterious image imprinted in my memory banks: a brilliant carp spirit who has taken on the form of a beautiful woman emerging from a pond, vividly glistening, dazzling and unforgettable.
NYFF56 Projections Lineup Announced
The Film Society of Lincoln Center announces the complete lineup for the Projections section of the 56th New York Film Festival, to take place October 4-7. The slate is comprised of seven features, seven shorts programs, and two short works that will be looped in the Elinor Bunin Munroe Amphitheater. This international selection of film and video work expands upon our notions of what the moving image can do and be.
The City as Escape Room: Yang's 'The Terrorizers' Remains a Puzzle Without a Solution
By way of global stars Hou Hsaio-hsien and Tsai Ming-liang, the elliptical gravity of new-wavey Taiwanese cinema is with us still, some thirty years later, but the back catalog of one of the prime movers, Edward Yang, remains largely unseen.
