A quantitative electrodiffusion model of antibacterial heavy metals: Ion influx through hydrophilic pores
Heavy metal ions are involved in many critical biochemical reactions of bacteria [1], especially involving sulfhydryl groups in proteins and smaller biomolecules [2]. However, if their amount exceeds toxic levels in the cytoplasm, the bacteria will die due to inhibition of protein activity or denaturation of nucleic acids [3], [4]. Copper and zinc ions are representative, with antibacterial properties, low cytotoxicity, and non-drug resistance [5].
