Faceless by Vanda Symon
LoveReading Expert Review of Faceless Faceless is an edgy standalone thriller that transports you to the streets of down under and struth, it’s a winner! If you’ve read the Sam Shephard series, you’ll know all about New Zealand’s Queen of Crime. If you’ve not read them, please do, they are cracking. Faceless is jam-packed with suspense, utterly gripping and I promise you’ll clench all the way through.
Symon, Vanda: Amazon.ca: Books
This is a book that really hit the spot. Triggering a whole gamut of emotions, anger, fear, compassion and empathy, feelings that at time are almost visceral, this book in not only thought provoking, but it is laden with almost unrelenting tension and is so perfectly paced that I just ate it up. This is a far cry from the world of Vanda Symon's series hero, Sam Shephard, but it's impact is no less powerful, in fact arguably more so, and it's characters equally memorable as any we have met before.

First time I’ve read a thriller set in New Zealand. Enjoyed it and the suspense was kept up well and the motive for the killing was certainly a different and unexpected twist. Good to have a woman as the main character. Recommended.

When a container ship spills its cargo on a New Zealand beach it sets in motion a series of events that puts Sam right in the middle of a whole heap of trouble. To have an understanding of Sam and what makes her just that little bit different, you really do need to start with Overkill and The Ringmaster.

The Ringmaster
May 13, 2019 Written by Sonja van der Westhuizen Published in iBook, Kindle, Print, Reviews Permalink Written by Vanda Symon — Sharp-witted, no-holds-barred Sam Shepard is back. After leaving her previous position in Mataura, deep in the countryside on New Zealand’s South Island, she’s starting a new job at the rank of detective in Dunedin. Being promoted after only a six-month trial and climbing up the career ladder doesn’t sit well with everyone.

The Ringmaster by Vanda Symon
LoveReading View on The Ringmaster A crime series you can really get your armchair sleuthing teeth into, Detective Sam Shepherd is back in her typical headstrong (oh so fabulous) style. I have quite simply adored the first two books in this award-winning New Zealand based series, which starts with ‘Overkill’ and is followed by ‘The Ringmaster’. A murder is linked to a travelling circus, and Sam wants in on the detective action.
Bitter Orange by Claire Fuller
Bitter Orange Synopsis Frances Jellico is dying. A man who calls himself the vicar visits, hoping to extract a deathbed confession. He wants to know what really happened that fateful summer of 1969, when Frances - tasked with surveying a dilapidated country house - first set eyes on the glamorous bohemian couple, Cara and Peter. She recalls the relationship they forged through sweltering days, lavish dinners and elaborate lies, and the Judas hole through which she would spy on the couple.
A Question of Trust by Jonathan Pinnock
LoveReading View on A Question of Trust Murder, mystery, and mayhem abound in this amusing action-packed read. I missed out on Volume One, ‘The Truth About Archie and Pye’ and though I would suggest starting at the beginning, I was still able to enjoy this mad caper of a story without feeling as though I had been left behind.
LoveReading Bookshop of the Month: The Ironbridge Bookshop
By Liz Robinson on 15th April 2019 Oh my word, the owner of The Ironbridge Bookshop sounds amazing! Meg is the youngest bookseller in the UK and just reading about how her bookshop was born gave me wonderful shivery goosebumps, she adores Terry Pratchett too so I really I want her to be my book friend (that isn’t meant in a scary way, I promise Megan!).

Q&A With Keith Stuart
By LoveReading on 12th April 2019 Days of Wonder by Keith Stuart was published in February, and we loved it! This book was reviewed for us by Liz Robinson: A complete and absolute delight, this is a treasure of a read. Tom and his fifteen year old daughter Hannah believe in the magic of the theatre, of creating moments in time that live forever in the memory, when everything comes under threat, can magic prevail?
Critical Incidents by Lucie Whitehouse
LoveReading View on Critical Incidents Razor-sharp, focused and absolutely fabulous, Critical Incidents is the first in what promises to be a stunning new series by Lucie Whitehouse. Detective Inspector Robin Lyons has been dismissed from the Met, turned down a proposal, and is heading back to her Mum and Dad in Birmingham with her daughter Lennie. Home isn’t necessarily a sanctuary when Robin starts to investigate a shocking crime and violence creeps ever closer.
The Brighton Mermaid by Dorothy Koomson
LoveReading View on The Brighton Mermaid Stop here to discover a terrific new voice in mystery and suspense, a voice owned by an established and truly eloquent author. Within a period of three weeks in 1993 the body of a young woman is discovered on the beach by teenagers Nell and Jude, then Jude disappears, twenty-five agonising years later Nell begins to uncover the truth.
A Perfect Marriage by Alison Booth
LoveReading View on A Perfect Marriage A beautifully thought-provoking, poignant, readable tale, and while some scenes make for chilling reading, it is actually full of love and hope. Sally has deliberately hidden the truth of events from ten years ago from her daughter. When she meets Anthony and love appears to be within touching distance, Sally has to revisit the past before she can contemplate her future.

It has been eagerly anticipated all year by everyone here at LoveReading and it's fantastic that we get to share this brilliant book with our closest Blogger friends as a part of the new LoveReading Ambassador Book Buzz. Industry Insight: Q&A with Liz Robinson
By Deborah Maclaren on 8th April 2019 As you might have guessed, we LOVE books. We love what we do, we love getting #bookpost and having the opportunity to read so many wonderful books for a living. We read A LOT of books between us, we gotta to keep our avid bookworm audience fully sated, content with a constant flow of reviews and recommendations on what to read next. Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver
LoveReading View on Wakenhyrst Wakenhyrst is a glorious darkly gothic feast of a read, and I really had no option other than to choose it as one of my picks of the month. Folklore and superstition are bound up in the Fens, Maud Steame has grown up there, surrounded by gossip, rumours and terrible secrets, will releasing her story set her free? Michelle Paver excels in quietly setting fear loose and disquiet scurrying free.

Forever and a Day by Anthony Horowitz
LoveReading View on Forever and a Day I was excited (of the jumping up and down variety) when Forever and a Day appeared in my letterbox, I am a HUGE 007 fan and can announce that this novel perfectly slots into place. The Ian Fleming Estate and Ian Fleming Publications asked Anthony Horowitz to continue the Bond series in 2015 with Trigger Mortis, after he had so successfully stepped into the world of Sherlock Holmes.
All We Ever Wanted by Emily Giffin
LoveReading View on All We Ever Wanted Bold, beautiful, provocative… and I mean provocative in the very best possible way. One compromising photo is all it takes for the lives of two families to be forever altered by the decisions made and actions taken. Each chapter is headed by a character and they tell their own story, the voices are distinctive and undeniably theirs, you could actually start to read without seeing the chapter heading and know within a few sentences who was talking to you.
Putting Authors in the Picture #8: Louise Beech
By Liz Robinson on 1st April 2019 Sssh, don’t tell anyone but Louise Beech is a particular favourite of mine, her books are wonderfully individual, quirky, beautiful observations of human life. Not only that, she is bold, passionate, her social media accounts make me ahh and chortle, and she is an Orenda author (and boy do Orenda know how to pick a fabulous book!).
Beneath the World, a Sea by Chris Beckett
LoveReading View on Beneath the World, a Sea An extraordinarily readable and fascinating exploration of ourselves, of what it is to be human. This is a novel that feels completely unique, it is also one that made me consider, ponder, wonder. Open the pages and discover our Earth, yet different, it is 1990 and a British Police Inspector is called to investigate the killings of a species in the Delta, South America.
House of Gold by Natasha Solomons
LoveReading View on House of Gold I’ll let you into a secret, I have a bit of a reading crush on Natasha Solomons as she writes such beautifully observed and engaging books. Each time I am transported, and her previous title ‘The Song Collector’ was one of my books of the year in 2015. I’m more than happy to announce that ‘House of Gold’ is another triumph. Set between 1911 and 1917 this is a story that reads on an epic scale.
Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin
LoveReading View on Ayesha at Last Forthright, funny Ayesha harbours dreams of being a poet and occasionally performs at a literary lounge, but her ambitions are somewhat hampered by her new teaching job and familial pressure to get married, a pressure that’s intensified by her stunning younger cousin’s countless marriage proposals. But Ayesha is adamant that she doesn’t want an arranged marriage, even if it means she might be doomed to spinsterhood.
The Confessions of Frannie Langton by Sara Collins
LoveReading View on The Confessions of Frannie Langton The Old Bailey, 1826 and Frannie Langton stands in court accused of the brutal murder of her former master and mistress. But “there was love between me and her”, she tells the court as she relates her story from 1812, when she worked at Paradise plantation, Jamaica. With the skills of reading and writing “packed inside” her, “dangerous as gunpowder”, Frannie is taken to London and sent to work for a man named George Benham.
Find Me Falling by Fiona Vigo Marshall
LoveReading View on Find Me Falling Unusual, stunning, stinging, a book to fall into, to flinch from, to be carried away by. When Bonnie and her family seek sanctuary in a cliff-top house, she meets Dominic who hides away in plain sight, both hurting and seeking a release, their lives collide. It took me a few pages to adjust to, and fall into sync with the glorious writing style, which felt as though it bypassed the page and instead reached straight into my mind.
The Courier by Kjell Ola Dahl
LoveReading View on The Courier A fascinating, intricate, provocative read, set in motion by events in 1942, and brilliantly highlighting human need and emotions. Ester escapes from Norway to Sweden after her family are deported to Auschwitz, involved in the resistance she is part of a plot that rears again 25 years later, and then in 2015 a link to the past finally begins to answer questions decades old.
Welcome to the Heady Heights by David F. Ross
LoveReading View on Welcome to the Heady Heights A smirky, fierce, heartachingly provocative read set in the Glasgow of the late 1970’s. 52 year old Archie is a bus conductor, however he dreams of bigger and better things, can he leave behind Glasgow, the gangsters, the corruption and make something of himself? Within just a few paragraphs, I knew exactly where I was and who I was with, the characters sit on the page with vibrancy and in some cases brooding attitude.
Chiddingstone Castle Literary Festival
By Liz Robinson on 1st March 2019 Chiddingstone Castle Literary Festival is an absolute treat for book lovers of all types, and for me it is an event I just have to attend, in fact as soon as the tickets become available, I have booking frenzy! I have really fond memories of last year, such glorious weather and fascinating talks, and of course I waxed lyrical about the festival for our blog.
Overkill Review
by Vanda Symon Sam Shepard, the only policewoman in the small rural town of Mataura, New Zealand, investigates the death of a young mother. Apparent suicide was in fact a murder, and the victim was married to Sam’s ex-boyfriend. Sam finds herself the main suspect and suspended from duty but decides to find the killer anyway and clear her name. Review Overkill’s opening chapter might seem a bit of an overkill in its horrific introduction to the crime happening in a tiny New Zealand town.
Authors 2019 - Newcastle Noir
Authors 2019 Authors appearing at the festival will appear here as we announce them. Lilja Sigurdardóttir We are delighted to announce that our friend Lilja Sigurðardóttir is returning to #NewcastleNoir again this year. Rachel's Pudding Pantry by Caroline Roberts
LoveReading View on Rachel's Pudding Pantry Ahh, what a lovely, generous, enjoyable read this is. Rachel finds it increasingly difficult to make a living on her family farm, with the support of friends, locals, and a particularly lovely neighbour called Tom, can Rachel and her Mum find a way to keep Primrose Farm? Caroline Roberts has a beautifully light touch, she explores difficult emotions and balances the tale with love and laughter too.
Insight Guides Great Railway Journeys of Europe by Insight Guides
LoveReading View on Insight Guides Great Railway Journeys of Europe From Abergynolwyn and Zvolen, Agrigento and Zürich, Great Railway Journeys of Europe is all a traveller needs to plan and enjoy European rail adventures. “Dear Victoria, gateway to the world beyond England. How I love your continental platform, and how I love trains anyway. Snuffing up the sulphurous smell ecstatically, so different from the feint, aloof, distantly oily smell of a boat.
Blood Orange by Harriet Tyce
LoveReading View on Blood Orange Hands up if you love a confident, penetrating, darkly brilliant psychological thriller, if you do then do step this way, as ‘Blood Orange’ is a stunner! Alison is defending her first murder case, all while having an affair, drinking too much, staying out too late and neglecting her husband and daughter… her life is about to get seriously complicated. Alison tells her own story, no holds barred we hear it as it is, and sometimes it isn’t pretty.
