Zahwa Mukhtar: Deaf theatre worker’s killer jailed for nearly 17 years

The father-of-two whose strike killed “beautiful, determined and loving soul” Zahwa Mukhtar has been sentenced to 16-and-a-half years in prison for her murder. Duane Owusu, 36, will serve nearly 16 years before being considered for parole after his murder conviction in March at the Old Bailey. Judge Richard Marks KC told Owusu he delivered “a forceful blow for which there was absolutely no need or justification”.

A man nicknamed “Nasty” has been convicted of murder for delivering the blow that killed “bright” and “bubbly” Zahwa Mukhtar, 27, on a night out. Duane Owusu, 36, pleaded not guilty to both murder and manslaughter, claiming he shoved Zahwa with an open hand rather than a clenched fist and didn’t mean to hurt her.

The man on trial for the murder of 27-year-old Zahwa Mukhtar expressed his remorse that none of the six occupants of the car adequately checked she was conscious. “She was still breathing” During his final day giving evidence, Duane Owusu was quizzed on his defence statement, probed on how the car they’d been travelling in circled back twice towards Zahwa. The first time was within minutes of her receiving an “open-handed shove” by Owusu.
