Indian farms have been losing their young workers—at a time they need the youth to improve farming
Indian policymakers recently renewed an old call: move workers out of agriculture. It is good economics—the traditional path to prosperity involves a country’s labour force moving from farms to manufacturing and then to services. Except that in India, that transformation is already done to a large extent, at least among the young. Such calls today ignore what has happened to the age structure of those employed on farms and what will happen if we push more people off them.
Employed women in Uttar Pradesh—what explains such a large increase within less than a decade?
In Uttar Pradesh (UP), 16 million additional women aged 15-64 had gained employment by the end of last year compared with eight years earlier. Between 2017 and 2025, as per official data, the proportion of women employed in India’s most populous state surged from 13.8% to 33.4%, a striking increase in less than a decade. Correspondingly, the proportion of women who were not looking for work declined sharply from over 72% to 53% over the period.
