Carmel-by-the-Sea is the kind of place that has a surfing sommelier, storybook cottages, secret courtyards, and a quarter moon beach. French hotels turn your sheets down at night and Sea Salt Carmel Caramels appear magically on your pillow. Much of the architecture is hobbit chic, a distinct aesthetic that adds to the fairyland feel of the place. The buildings all have names rather than addresses in this enchanted, eminently walkable square mile, and there are no chain stores to be found any where.
