While walking through the Gole Market area, one can still find the ruins of the single-storeyed quarters that the British government had built for its middle-level staff. Tucked among these last remnants of the Capital’s first residential colony, built in the early 1920s, are rows of four-storeyed and some multi-storeyed flats.

Barsatis: the dream room that shaped modern Delhi

In Andhera Band Kamra, a novel written in the 1960s by celebrated Hindi writer Mohan Rakesh, the protagonist lives in a humble barsati in Anand Parbat (West Delhi). The small rooftop evokes the Delhi of that era. The barsati was a one-room living space built on the terrace of a house which usually included a small kitchen and an attached bathroom. Some had an extra tiny room. The real appeal lay in the large open terrace around these barsatis that one could watch the entire neighbourhood from.

Pamela Mountbatten and her enduring ties with Delhi

The walls of Mahatma Gandhi’s tiny room at Valmiki Mandir on Mandir Marg carry several pictures of towering leaders, including Frontier Gandhi Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Among them is a sepia-coloured photograph in which Gandhi is seen talking to Pamela Mountbatten, the young daughter of India’s last Viceroy, Lord Louis Mountbatten. She regularly attended his all-faith prayer meetings and listened to his messages of non-violence and unity.
