Pastor T. L. Barrett and the Youth for Christ Choir, “I Shall Wear a Crown”
Pastor T.L. Barrett and the Youth for Christ Choir I Shall Wear a Crown NUMERO GROUP 8/10 To be known and fully appreciated beyond being a sampled footnote in Kanye West’s catalog: if this five-disc set of a beloved Chicago pastor’s finest work in fusing gospel R&B and funk does nothing else, it is that.
Pastor T. L. Barrett and the Youth for Christ Choir: I Shall Wear a Crown
It’s a child’s question: Where does God live? In Heaven or outer space, perhaps, or maybe a house of worship right here on Earth. Asking “where” unspools the “how” and the “if,” and things only get more complicated from there. For T.L. Barrett and his followers, God lived at 5512 S. Indiana Avenue in Chicago, the address where the 23-year-old pastor stepped into the pulpit of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in 1967.
After 50 Years, a Gospel-Soul Legend (Finally) Gets His Due

Barrett released highly regarded but largely unknown funk and soul gems, a new, career-spanning box set helps spread the Chicago pastor's message to the masses “About five years ago, they told me that Kanye West was sampling — I had never heard the term — my music. And I said, ‘Well, I hope he likes it.’ I thought they meant he was listening to it,” Pastor T.L. Barrett tells Rolling Stone. “But my record company said, ‘No, it’s on his album.

Soul | Music Millennium
If life was at all fair Ural Thomas would be a household name, his music slotted into countless sweet, seductive mixtapes between James Brown, Otis Redding, and Stevie Wonder (all of whom Thomas has performed with.) Straddling the line between hot soul shouter and velvety-smooth crooner, Thomas released a few singles in the late 60s and early 70s; most notably Can You Dig It, which featured backing vocals from soul luminaries Merry Clayton, Mary Wells and Brenda Holloway.

The Reader‘s archive is vast and varied, going back to 1971. Every day in Archive Dive, we’ll dig through and bring up some finds In 2016, Reader contributor Steve Krakow explored the backstory of local preacher and gospel-funk musician Pastor T.L. Barrett for the Secret History of Chicago Music. Krakow’s account ends with Barrett’s conviction for operating a pyramid scheme that defrauded thousands. That wasn’t the first time the preacher’s crimes landed in the pages of the Reader.

Episode #11: “Bonzaiships of Venus” by Kate Heartfield
The work of aesthetics is the aesthetics of work. Makoto adjusted the angle of his scalpel’s electron beam, exhaled and made the cut. A fingernail-sized section of the airship’s graphene skin peeled away to join the miniature airship attached to its exterior like a soap bubble. This was neither Makoto’s only bonsaiship nor his first. But it was and would always be the most precious to him. He had made the first cut nearly a year before, on the day of his husband’s death.
