Abstract The Afar depression in northeastern Ethiopia contains a rich palaeontological and archaeological record, which documents 6 million years of human evolution. Abundant faunal evidence links evolutionary patterns with palaeoenvironmental change as a principal underlying force1. Many of the earlier hominin taxa recognized today are found in the Afar, but Paranthropus has been conspicuously absent from the region.

Abstract The eastern branch of the Eastern African Rift System (EARS) is the source of a large proportion of the early hominin fossil record, but it covers a tiny fraction (ca. 1%) of the continent. Here we investigate how this mismatch between where fossils are preserved and where hominins probably lived may influence our ability to understand early hominin evolution, using extant mammals as analogues.

1 INTRODUCTION The family Bovidae [Mammalia: Artiodactyla] is one of the 10 currently recognised families of terrestrial ungulates within the order Artiodactyla (Burgin et al., 2018). Bovids are the most speciose group of extant ungulates, containing approximately 140 species (Grzimek, 2003; Hernández Fernández & Vrba, 2005; Huffman, 2020; Walker, 1999; Wilson & Reeder, 2005). Members of the family are currently found all over the globe in almost every type of terrestrial habitat (Grzimek, 2003).
