On the Brink, We Must Unite
Guest Opinion By Walt Wood | Oct. 10, 2026 As an independent voter and confessing Christian, I oppose the following: The degradation of our democratic institutions, including a disempowered Congress and corrupt Supreme Court. The violent, masked, paramilitary force known as ICE. Extrajudicial killings of people in boats. The Epstein criminals. The destruction of USAID, and the catastrophic, ongoing results. The incessant assaults on Gaza and Ukraine.
Enemies Within
Guest Opinion By Walt Wood | Aug. 15, 2026 Since our nation’s birth, Americans have cast one another as worthy winners and hapless losers. Embracing these roles leaves millions pursuing an American Dream they will never realize. Countless automatons worship a false prophet who preaches money lust above all. How else can losers become winners in the American econosphere? Attaining financial independence is the ultimate goal, after all—any true American’s highest calling.
Why I Love Our President
Guest Opinion By Walt Wood | June 6, 2026 Dear Mr. President, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. Though I will stop short of naming you the greatest president of all time, you are definitely in the top five. You have accomplished over the course of five and a half years in office what no president has ever achieved in the history of our great nation.
Democracy or Autocracy: It’s Up to Us
Guest Opinion By Walt Wood | Jan. 24, 2026 Our nation may not have been this divided since before the Civil War. Party politics are tearing us apart, escalating the threat of American-on-American violence. However, when I look around Bellaire, Central Lake, and other villages in Antrim County, almost all people of every political stripe are decent human beings who support one another.
Patriarchy and Misogyny
Guest Opinion By Walt Wood | Sept. 13, 2025 Our Declaration of Independence states that all men are created equal. A proper rewording of that phrase for the 21st century would be: “All people are created equal.” But that would be “woke” and unacceptable. Putting women on an equal footing with men is forbidden by the current powers that be. Almost 250 years after Jefferson’s timeless document, we still refuse to treat women as equals. While MAGA rules, men’s rights from state to state are unaffected.
The Sins of a Nation
Guest Opinion By Walt Wood | June 7, 2025 "Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." As Christians, this is how we begin prayer. The starting point is confession. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. My Lord, Jesus Christ, has instructed me to love myself and my neighbors, and spread the good news of his life, service, death, and resurrection. I confess to failing in response to that call. I am not a “good” Christian. I fall short every day.
Civilization or Barbarism? A Christian Perspective
Guest Opinion By Walt Wood | April 12, 2025 "Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." Our faith begins with confession. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. I have a beef with fellow Christians who ignore the threat of authoritarianism by hiding behind the words: “I am in this world, but not of this world.” It is a simple excuse to avoid responsibility in our struggle to preserve self-governance.
We all are caretakers of Democracy
Americans are disinterested in extreme politics. We know what communism is. We witnessed the bloody reigns of Stalin and Chairman Mao. We know what fascism is. We witnessed the bloody reigns of Hitler and Mussolini. Americans reject communism and we reject fascism. Period. Full stop. Yet, in the current presidential race, these terms are bandied about. Accusations fly. “He’s a fascist!” “She’s a communist!” It’s up to us, the American voters, to sort out what is what.
Caretakers of Democracy
I have grown weary of politics—all the gridlock and corruption are wearing me out. What with the dis- and misinformation out there, it has become increasingly difficult to sort the truth from the lies. Part of me wants to give up and tune it all out. I must resist this temptation. Sure, democracy is messy. Self-governance is difficult. Dishonest and corrupt politicians exist, on both sides of the aisle. In a free society, it’s unavoidable. That’s the nature of humanity. We are sinners.
Christian Nationalism: A Perversion of Christianity
Guest Opinion By Walt Wood | Sept. 7, 2024 "Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." As a Christian, this is how I begin prayer. The starting point is confession. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. Most Christians would agree with that, but perhaps not all. Numerous denominations exist under the umbrella of Christianity.
