Abstract The theoretical description of the interplay between coherent evolution and chemical exchange, originally developed for magnetic resonance and later applied to other spectroscopic regimes, was derived under incorrect statistical assumptions. Correcting these assumptions provides access to the exact form of the chemical exchange interaction, which we derive within the Lindblad master equation formalism for generality.

A recent paper in this journal [1] presents magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data on humans which are asserted to 'suggest that we may have witnessed entanglement mediated by consciousness-related brain functions. Those brain functions must then operate non-classically, which would mean that consciousness is non-classical.' The experiments were on done on resting human subjects by imaging intermolecular multiple-quantum coherences (iMQCs) which provide a novel source of image contrast [2–12].
