Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Editorial intern at Mediabistro.com: an rather awesome gig for someone who knew nothing about media or the working lives of journalists.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. It is an invaluable tool in circumstances involving delivering babies, thwarting robberies as well as, surprisingly enough, writing.

How is social media changing news?

It's perfecting the inverse correlation between infinitesimally smaller attention spans and sanctimony.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Ford Prefect from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A general disdain for cliched, pat questions — this one included.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Short and sweet; actual working knowledge of the publication; don't blabber about your credentials, show me the quality of your writing.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Adobe Creative Cloud products; Final Cut X; WordPress & Ektron; Audacity & ProTools; minimalist word processing apps; coffee.

What's your favorite social network?

Facebook, with Twitter being a close second.

Who do you wish followed you?

Gadget enthusiasts, music aficionados, people passionate about cuisine and culture, Time Warner customer support.

Why did you become a journalist?

I knew that the innumerable questions I had about the way the world worked would not be answered by a job in finance or law.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Several profiles of musicians and composers.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Cultivate a boundless curiosity in everything except law school.

When's the best time to pitch you?

After I've had coffee.
