Construction and validation of a predictive model for recurrent wheezing risk within one year after initial hospitalization for RSV lower respiratory tract infection in preschool children
Abstract Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in preschool children and is strongly associated with subsequent recurrent wheezing; however, predictive tools for identifying high-risk children are lacking. This study aimed to construct and validate a model for predicting recurrent wheezing within one year after initial hospitalization for RSV LRTI.
Omentin-1 and cardiovascular disease: a comprehensive review from molecular mechanisms to clinical translation
Abstract Omentin-1 is an adipokine predominantly secreted by visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and is abundant in human plasma. Circulating omentin-1 levels are significantly reduced in patients with obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension, and coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the associations between circulating omentin-1 levels and cardiovascular risk and prognosis appear heterogeneous across populations and disease stages.
Investigating and inhibiting cathode-side gas generation for practical low-temperature and fast Li-ion batteries
Abstract Weakly solvating electrolytes attract increased interest in low-temperature lithium-ion batteries since they can overcome the kinetic limitations of lithium-ion desolvation. However, the high content of weakly-coordinating/free solvents poses a threat to the oxidative stability of weakly solvating electrolytes. Herein, we investigate the oxidation and gas-producing behaviour of weakly solvating electrolytes with typical low-melting-point solvents inside low-temperature pouch cells.
Evaluation of integrated, multimedia biomarkers of prenatal metals exposure in association with child neurodevelopment in Puerto Rico
Abstract Biomarkers can be measured in various media, including urine or blood, which represent different biological compartments and toxicokinetic pathways, resulting in potential biases when estimating the internal dose of an environmental exposure. Integrating measurements across multiple media as a multimedia biomarker (MMB) may better characterize an exposure, allowing for improved assessment of exposure-outcome relationships.

The global synthetic drugs market and its implications: where to go from here?
ABSTRACT The global drug market has been fundamentally reshaped by the rise of synthetic drugs — from synthetic opioids and methamphetamine to new psychoactive substances — placing the existing international drug control architecture under growing strain. Unlike plant-based substances, synthetic drugs can be produced anywhere, scaled rapidly, and chemically altered to evade controls, challenging the multilateral frameworks designed to govern them.
Docosahexaenoic acid attenuates neuropathological alterations in a rodent model of neonatal bilirubin-induced encephalopathy
Abstract Background: Neonatal bilirubin encephalopathy (kernicterus) results from toxic accumulation of unconjugated bilirubin in the brain, often leading to irreversible neurological damage. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, may attenuate bilirubin-induced neuropathological alterations in neonates.
A valve-switching based ion chromatography strategy for simultaneous determination of trace cations in table salt
Abstract An ion chromatography method was established for monitoring trace K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ in table salt. A valve-switching technique was used as on-line method to eliminate the interference of Na+. The salt sample was dissolved in deionised water, and appropriate amounts were passed through 0.22 μm filter membrane before sampling. The Na+ was transferred to waste while other cations were retained on a Dionex CG12A column and then separated by a Dionex CS12A column.
A predictive model for PICC-related thrombosis in sepsis patients using XGBoost algorithm
Abstract Percutaneous insertion of central venous catheters (PICC) is critical for the management of sepsis patients requiring prolonged intravenous therapy; however, it poses significant complications, including thrombosis. Identifying risk factors for PICC-related thrombosis can enhance clinical management and patient outcomes. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for PICC-related thrombosis in sepsis patients using the XGBoost algorithm.
Alteration pattern of serum albumin levels in schizophrenia from first episode through remission to relapse: a longitudinal study - Translational Psychiatry
Abstract Serum albumin, a reverse acute-phase protein, tends to decrease in response to acute clinical conditions. We hypothesized that albumin levels would exhibit state-dependent dynamics, with distinct patterns between acute episodes and remission states in schizophrenia. To test this, we conducted a retrospective longitudinal study to investigate the dynamic serum albumin levels in 148 schizophrenia patients, starting from their first episode through remission and subsequent relapse.

Effectiveness and safety of esketamine in laparoscopic surgery patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
1 Introduction Laparoscopic surgery is becoming more widespread, but pneumoperitoneum can adversely affect the respiratory, circulatory, and nervous systems, leading to postoperative pain and disrupted sleep quality. Despite these challenges, it offers benefits, including lower complication rates, quicker recovery, and minimal iatrogenic trauma (Sjövall et al., 2015; Zhao et al., 2024).
Frontiers | Impact of individualized tidal volume strategies on intraoperative lung protection and inflammatory markers in laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a randomized controlled trial
ORIGINAL RESEARCH article Volume 16 - 2025 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fphys.2025.1667207 1 Introduction During laparoscopic cholecystectomy, mechanical ventilation serves as a critical component of respiratory support for patients under general anesthesia. However, it is also associated with the risk of ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI), which is frequently mediated by biotrauma (Jaecklin et al., 2015).
A class of directed acyclic graphs with mixed data types in mediation analysis
1 Introduction In many practical studies, mediation analysis is the method of choice to investigate a putative mechanistic pathway that involves two or more hypothesized causal factors. A mechanistic pathway under investigation is often pictorially presented by a directed acyclic graph (DAG), as shown in Figure 1a, in which the acyclicity explains how the influence of exposure X $$ X $$ on outcome Y $$ Y $$ is mediated through an intermediate variable M $$ M $$ or a mediator.
Human Schlafen 14 Cleavage of Short Double‐Stranded RNAs Underpins its Antiviral Activity
1 Introduction Schlafen (SLFN) proteins are encoded by a family of interferon-stimulated genes.[1] Accumulating evidence has revealed that SLFNs are involved in various cellular functions, including cell proliferation, the immune response, and viral replication restriction.[1, 2] In recent years, structural characterizations have demonstrated that SLFN proteins share conserved structural architectures despite their diverse roles in the immune responses.[3-6] Many SLFN proteins function as...

Methaemoglobinaemia in an Infant with a Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy
1. Introduction MetHb is a functional anaemia in which haemoglobin is unable to reversibly bind oxygen due to the oxidation of ferrous (Fe+2) ions of heme to the ferric (Fe+3) state [1]. The oxygen affinity of any remaining normal ferrous heme is increased, causing a left shift of the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve and subsequent hypoxia [1].

Anomalous Photocurrent Reversal for the Same Polarization Direction in van der Waals Ferroelectric ${\mathrm{Cu}\mathrm{In}\mathrm{P}}_{2}{\mathrm{S}}_{6}$
Popular Summary Ferroelectric materials that showcase the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) have gained attention in the realm of photoelectric applications due to their ability to generate photovoltage above the bandgap and exhibit switchable photoresponse. Despite this interest, there is much to uncover about the relationship between the photocurrent and spontaneous polarization.
A Dual-FSM GI LiDAR Imaging Control Method Based on Two-Dimensional Flexible Turntable Composite Axis Tracking
1. Introduction Ghost imaging (GI) represents an innovative imaging paradigm that executes a correspondence operation between the detected signal light, which conveys physical light intensity information, and the measurement matrix associated with the reference light path. This technique capitalizes on the second-order intensity correlation between these two light paths to acquire the image information of the object, as delineated in the references [1,2,3].
