AI is going great for the blind.
As I was looking at the amount of times platforms died on the web and I began thinking about the slow death of AI enthusiasm and what that will do to the Blind community. It really is a bizarre feeling when you’re the only skeptic of a thing within your own community. My first post about AI has gained some attention, as well as the follow up post about this topic. AI is taking the blind community by storm.

Some tips for Blind Audio Description writers
Before I worked in the audio description industry and joined an audio description collective, I consumed audio description daily. For those not familiar with audio description, it’s painting a picture with words for those that are unable to look at a screen, including Blind and visually impaired people. There are many samples you can watch to get a sense of how audio description works. It’s painting a picture between natural pauses in the soundtrack of a production.
Hosting an inclusive open mic series.
I’ve participated in many inclusive events in the past. Now, I’m planning my own inclusive open mic event series with the Chicago Public library. I’d like to feature Disabled performers. The events will take place in 2023, starting in February. Exact dates and times of each event are being finalized.
Falling into romance writing.
Before I begin, I’m going to be linking to a lot of books, so make sure you have the library extension installed! It will help you save your wallet and find these books at libraries near you. Sometimes, a tragic event can leave you evaluating your whole presence on this earth. Unfortunately, after almost three years of COVID free life, I contracted COVID—19.

How plain language books increase readership
A type of access in the publishing industry began swimming around my brain for the past week and I wanted to highlight why there should be more of it. It began when I was recommending a book to a sighted friend. They wanted some book recommendations. I recommended some books, they tried the books, then they reported back, I suggested audio books, but the words used were still too complex. I began looking for a plain language version of the book but couldn’t find any.

About me in my own words.
This originally appeared in Bold Blind Beauty in June 2020. The website appears to have shut down so I am printing this essay here. Born A Miracle I’ve always been somewhat of a miracle baby, or person, I guess you could say now. I fully embrace it, though, and yes, even the inspirational label that gets placed on me sometimes. I embrace it all because I just simply don’t have time to quibble over a slightly incorrect label. My miracle journey started in 1989 where I was a premature baby.

Why I read banned books.
Currently reading Answers in the Pages by David Levithan. For weeks, I’ve been trying to think of a topic to write about and examine. I’ve been trying to find a broad topic that I could do research on and write about, somehow tie it into publishing and my thoughts on how we could make publishing better after examining this issue, but I just didn’t have it in me this month, or for a while, if I’m being honest.

Mastodon for writers/readers
Donate to me if you enjoy the below guide! I finally did it. I deleted Twitter off my phone and subsequent apps off my phone. I still kept my twitter account active because a bunch of IFTTT recipes still post to it and a bunch of places have linked to it in the past and I don’t want to give up my username to a bad actor or troll. I did, however, request my data, move completely to Mastodon on a writer focused instance, and checked to see who I follow is on the Fediverse at large.

Updates - BookWyrm
@WeirdWriter It felt like it takes place over a year to me! And it didn't strike me as at all transphobic or misogynistic at all! It does deal with a white woman weaponizing accusations of misogyny at the Black protagonist which I'd guess is where that stems from?

One for All by Lillie Lainoff One for All is a gender-bent retelling of The Three Musketeers, in which a girl with a chronic illness trains as a Musketeer and uncovers secrets, sisterhood, and self-love. Updates only and author harassment
This is a follow-up to the post Different Literary Activism. I was reading a Trans and Disability inclusive Harry Potter fanfiction called Basilisk Eyes. I took a break from the audiobook, bookmarked another Blind Harry Potter series, and finally just turn my once active social media accounts, including Twitter, into updates only accounts. I’ll still post to social media using automation tools and human managers, but I won’t engage with users anymore.
PEN America Writers Emergency Fund
In 2022, I won this very unexpected grant. It arrived at the worst time in my writing career, as well. I was unable to write due to a lot of factors. I even completely forgot I applied to the PEN America Writers Emergency Fund. The grant acceptance was the very unexpected push I needed to get myself back on my feet. I still couldn’t write as much, but still, the grant helped deal with an emergency. In addition to the funds awarded, I was granted complimentary year-long membership to PEN America.
How self descriptions benefit Blind and sighted.

Flipping the Script on Audio Description - Going Social
I was interviewed for this podcast episode about Social Audio Description. The podcast has transcripts!
On Podcast Website Accessibility
This one made the rounds when it was on Medium. If you like it, share this version. I’m told it’s easier on the eyes. 👀. Ever since starting my podcast journey after losing my vision, I’ve enjoyed many elegant soundscapes, worlds created through tones of voices, and musical scores that have made me eager to hear what happens next. Podcasts, are, by nature, designed for the blind and the visually impaired because they are audio experiences.
New accessibility efforts
I woke up this morning and realized my audience is mostly Blind and visually impaired readers. That would make sense. Right? I mean, after all, I’m Blind, so it’s only natural people in my own community want to support me. As I get more involved with the wider Disability community, though, I began to notice that my events and otherwise weren’t accessible to everybody. At least, as accessible as they could be to the widest possible audience.

AirPods 3 review: Helping the visually impaired and blind
Apple has a long standing foothold in the accessibility space, dating all the way back to 2004 when VoiceOver was introduced in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. In 2009, it had the first screen reader designed for mobile touch interfaces, and it was all conjured by one totally blind man, Mike Shebanek. Apple’s accessibility efforts span many devices, including headphones and earphones. In 2021, Apple released the AirPods 3.

But then she meets another sick kid. He’s got a chronic illness Isabel’s never heard of, something she can’t even pronounce. He understands what it means to be sick. He understands her more than her healthy friends. He understands her more than her own father who’s a doctor. He’s gorgeous, fun, and foul-mouthed.
Online pitch events help writers and readers.
Before Covid-19 changed a lot of the publishing landscape in 2020, many writers, established and emerging, would attend writing conferences that would cost money to pitch to literary agents, hoping that being in person would give them an upper hand in the pitching process. Thankfully, COVID-19 disrupted the, what I call, conference industrial complex.
