When I was young, the world saw me for the little boy I was. But as each year passed, the world stopped seeing me as a harmless kid and started seeing me as something entirely different. Intimidating. Threatening. That shift had a profound effect on me. I thought that, maybe, I was destined to become what society expected me to be. For a while, I seemed to give in to those expectations. Didn’t pay attention in school. Got into trouble.

A few weeks ago, I sat down for Jubilee’s Surrounded series in a big warehouse studio. Surrounded by 20 people who had not voted in the last election – some who had never voted in their lives – to debate them. I walked out of that room filled with hope. The cynics out there in the world tell us a conversation like the one I had isn’t worth having. That we’ve become too divided. That everyone has already chosen a side, and the only thing left to do is shout louder than our political opponents.
