Practicing water safety is as critical as knowing how to swim. Since I frequently swim Long Island Sound, I was recently reminded by neighbors to swim visibly among boat traffic. It’s a reminder worth sharing this weekend, the occasion of World Drowning Prevention Day on Saturday, July 25. I was late to learn swimming myself, at 11 years old when my parents added a pool to our backyard.

With Connecticut scandals making media headlines in the last month, I have a sudden distrust of public officials and our public institutions. From investigations into former New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart and my university system’s ongoing issues, I am disheartened and frustrated as a taxpayer and educator. As a political romantic, I believe we should all engage in the policymaking process. This goes beyond voters electing officials and officials making decisions.
