The Roots of My Hair
At this point, the “Black hair origin story” is somewhat ubiquitous in contemporary comics. In recent years we’ve seen work such as Wash Day Diaries (Jamila Rowser & Robyn Smith), Hot Comb (Ebony Flowers), Frizzy (Claribel A. Ortega) , Curl Friends (Sharee Miller) and other comics created by Black women on this very topic (albeit approached in various ways, which I’ll get to later). In an industry historically populated by white men, this topic may have initially seemed fringe or niche.
"You Don't Need Permission": An Interview with Lawrence Lindell
When I first came across Lawrence Lindell's self-published minicomics a few years ago, I was impressed by their open, thoughtful and whimsical approach to cartooning. Lindell, a prolific cartoonist, musician and educator from California, has explored topics from their own life, including Blackness, queerness, mental health (they have been very transparent about living with bipolar disorder) and community. Lindell has been self-publishing their work for a decade.

Creative burnout is inevitable. I recently took a different approach to overcome it — and it worked.
Whit Taylor 4h 4h One of the nice things about growing older is getting the chance to approach old problems in new, more informed ways. As a cartoonist, I have dealt with burnout periodically and often pushed myself to “get over it” to my own detriment. This time I took a different approach.

Be Your Own Backing Band
Description Liz Prince has been drawing comics about her love for punk music for a long time. In 2010 Liz started drawing comics for the website, If You Make It, and followed that up with doing the same for the non-profit punk magazine, Razorcake. Be Your Own Backing Band collects these comics in a single volume! It can be helpful if you’re familiar with the DIY music scene these two outlets cover. Liz doesn’t shy away from quoting whole punk songs, or writing recaps of shows she goes to.
