When Paul Krugman Won the Nobel for Economics
Eighteen years ago this week, Paul Krugman was awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Ostensibly, he won it “for his analysis of trade patterns and location of economic activity,” but most likely he received it because he had spent the previous eight years attacking the George W. Bush administration from his perch as a New York Times columnist, as Bush was rather unpopular with a majority of Europeans.
Repeal the Jones Act
As any follower of Austrian economics knows, lawmakers—in any form—are usually the enemies of free markets and the prosperity that they bring. However, there are times when legislators manage to outdo themselves and pass laws that are absolutely destructive, and the Jones Act is one of them.

Ben Bernanke Didn’t Prevent a Depression. He Prevented a Recovery
As the US economy stumbles through rounds of inflation and self-inflicted crises, a look backward might be appropriate. To those that say we only should look to the future, the Federal Reserve’s history of the last two decades tells us that governmental and monetary authorities will do the wrong thing and make things worse. It is time to scrutinize the past.

The Destabilizing Stabilizers: Why Increasing Government Spending Prolongs a Recession
One of the Standard Holy Doctrines of modern macroeconomics is the claim that the only way to end a recession is to increase government spending. John Maynard Keynes formalized this doctrine in his infamous The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money and his disciples then spread the word in the halls of academe and government.

Jason Arday and the DEI System that Just Won’t Die
What began as farce has ended in tragedy. The strange and fraudulent academic career of Jason Arday, the black sociology professor at Cambridge University who was found to have fabricated much of life’s record, ended with his recent resignation from his prestigious faculty position, but then took an even darker turn as he apparently took his own life.
Jason Arday and the DEI System that Just Won’t Die
After the death of Jason Arday, it is appropriate to examine the academic system in higher education and see why we should not expect it to change.

The Alice-in-Wonderland World of the WNBA
As Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever drove toward the basket for a seemingly easy breakaway layup, DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky bore down on her. Carrington, an aggressive defender, is well-known in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) for blocking shots from behind, but this potential block had no potential at all. When Cunningham left her feet to take the shot, Carrington’s right arm reached out, but missed the ball by several feet.

Trump’s Commerce Department as Venture Capitalist: Political Investment at its Worst
As America’s first reality show president, Donald Trump wants people to think he is breaking new ground and transforming America for the better. Stepping where no president before has gone, Trump has directed the U.S. Commerce Department to take equity positions in 30 American firms, which clearly is controversial.

The Goal of Socialists Is Socialism — Not Prosperity

Yes, Democratic Socialists Want Soviet-Style Control of Capital
There is no doubt that people who identify as democratic socialists are making large gains in the Democratic Party. They control mayoral offices in major cities like New York and Seattle and are going to be a force in the next Congress, having seen enormous success in the Democratic Party congressional primaries. However, there is much disagreement over the extent of how far this current batch of socialists want to push social, political, and economic changes.

Democratic Socialists: One Vote, One Time?
Even a casual observer of America’s political scene can see that the Democratic Socialists of America have become a powerful force in electoral politics, as their candidates are winning one Democratic Party primary after another. This past week saw three more radical leftists winning congressional primaries in New York City, taking down two well-established members of Congress in the process.

Oppose Graham Platner for His Socialism, Not Just His Outrageous Behavior
Thanks in large part to the erratic and often-destructive policies coming from Donald Trump’s White House, the Democrats are favored to win both houses of Congress, as they hope to flip several Republican-held seats in the House and the Senate. One of the most closely-watched races is the Senate campaign in Maine, where upstart Democrat Graham Platner is favored to end Sen. Susan Collins’s long political career.

ANDERSON: How American Progressives Influenced Hitler
In a recent article, I agreed with Justice Clarence Thomas that progressivism has done (and still does) much damage to our body politic and society. Obviously, the so-called intelligentsia in academe, politics, and the media didn’t agree. What really set off the critics, however, was Thomas’s claim that progressivism had helped pave the way for Hitler, Stalin, and Mao.
