What is astronomy?
Editor’s note: “What is …?” is a section-wide column that explores the STEM majors at UW and explains what they are. This week, contributing writer William Gould describes astronomy. While many people may have some level of curiosity about outer space, it is uncommon to see this curiosity expand into an entire college major or career. However, at the UW astronomy department, people dedicate their lives to understanding the past, present, and future of the cosmos.
Examining the DRS accommodation process and effectiveness
For over 7,000 students across UW’s three campuses, Disability Resources for Students (DRS) is critical for a sufficient education in the classroom. The Washington State Core Services Act requires UW to ensure “students with disabilities are reasonably accommodated … with the appropriate core service or services necessary to ensure equal access.” To receive accommodations, students submit an application, which includes disability documentation and requested accommodations.

Peek Into The British Influence On Ambedkar
Photo: Ambedkar in London, By William Gould, Santosh Dass and Christophe Jaffrelot B.R. Ambedkar’s political ideas have not ceased to inspire and mobilize people to this day. His views on caste, labor, women, education, and people’s rights and representation have resonated not only in the country, but also around the world. It is a well-documented chronicle of the lesser-known time of life in London of the man hailed as the father of India’s Constitution.

why we're studying 19th-century ocean records
Floods have caused unprecedented damage in Europe recently, while in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou, the equivalent of a year’s worth of average rainfall fell in just three days. In stark contrast, extreme heat and droughts have spawned wildfires and caused hundreds of deaths in northwest America. This kind of extremely wet or dry weather is likely to becoming more common as climate change intensifies.

Diary of an impatient patient | The Conservative Woman
BETWEEN tests and treatments for cancer and other afflictions, I have been reading the news and reflecting on it . . . Here are some verbals from actor Sir Patrick Stewart, best known for playing the relief boss after Captain Kirk left Star Trek. Stewart said of Brexit: ‘It makes me very, very sad.
Reader’s comment: The Marx who got it right | The Conservative Woman
In response to Janice Davis: Oh for a Burns to skewer our lousy politicians, Andrew Dock wrote: Nothing he said compares to one of the great comedians of the 20th century, Groucho Marx: ‘Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.’ - Advertisement - If you appreciated this article, perhaps you might consider making a donation to The Conservative Woman. Readers’ comments special: Choke on it, you supercilious luvvie | The Conservative Woman
LAURA Perrins’s piece on the reaction from some sections of the community to the new 50p coin marking our departure from the EU touched a chord with our readers. Here are some extracts from their comments: Shibusa wrote: This 50p sure is a litmus test regarding the maturity level of some remainers, which sadly is little more than schoolchild juvenility from what I’ve seen so far. I will never get my head around the outpouring of love for the EU – the sort of love reserved for a parent or child.
Marriage guidance for the English and Scots | The Conservative Woman
QUEEN Anne gave Royal Assent to the Act of Union in 1707, forming the United Kingdom of Great Britain. How times have changed. As someone who principally supports the union, I cannot understand nor sympathise with those in England who actively wish to expel the Scots. Even if current economic subsidies harm English interests, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland constitute a natural characteristic of our identity from which we all benefit.
50p for your thoughts, Remoaners | The Conservative Woman
SO a funny thing happened on the internet – the exact same people who said we were petty for wanting to take back control and secure our independence from a federal Europe, the exact same people who did everything in their power, wasting three long years scuppering a clear and comprehensive vote to leave the EU, are now losing their minds over the Brexit 50p coin. This coin, by the way, says ‘Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations’: obviously offensive to many.
The Cambridge Handbook of U.S. Labor Law for the Twenty-First Century
Over the last fifty years in the United States, unions have been in deep decline, while income and wealth inequality have grown. In this timely work, editors Richard Bales and Charlotte Garden - with a roster of thirty-five leading labor scholars - analyze these trends and show how they are linked.
Despair of a young conservative
I ATTENDED a South East Regional Young Conservative Conference last Saturday in Farnborough, Hampshire, so you didn’t have to . . . From the outset, I’d like to make it clear that this article is not directed to any Young Conservatives individually nor towards those who did a terrific job in organising the conference. Many of the attendees I spoke to were admirable in their intentions to get involved, however naively, in party affairs.
Opinion: Gig economy workers must be ‘in the room where it happens’
Uber, Lyft and the burgeoning ride-sharing industry are confronted with the 2018 California Supreme Court Dynamex ruling that will convert their drivers from independent contractors who possess no benefits and low wages into employees immediately covered by the nation’s panoply of labor laws. The Legislature is considering AB 5, which would codify the Dynamex ruling. This has driven the industry to seek a legislative bailout from the Democratic supermajority and organized labor in Sacramento.

Editor's Note William S. Gould, MD, is a retired family physician from Gold Bar, Washington, and a veteran of the US Army. Dr Gould responded to a recent series of articles on physician suicide posted by Medscape. The following are his thoughts and opinions and do not necessarily reflect those of Medscape or WebMD.
Ending Resident Suicides Starts With More Humane Training
Are We Training Doctors to Eventually Leave Medicine? I begged him not to allow the bullying of academia to do to him what it had to me. He graduated near the top of his medical school class, but was already asking whether he had made a terrible mistake. Other than fewer hours at the hospital (and in the end, not that many less), his residency was no different than mine, and I watched the spark fade as each season passed.

The Hindu Right and the War Against Women in India
The right-wing promise to protect “Hindu traditions” offers shelter to male constituencies troubled by the apparent threat of women’s professional and sexual independence in modern India. In his savage book, Capital: The Eruption of Delhi, on the nature of India’s capital’s transformation as a global metropolis, Rana Dasgupta describes the besieged forms of Indian patriarchy in the modern city that, he argues, signal a crisis for the traditional values of north Indian men.
Opinion: Why Supreme Court shouldn’t strike down mandatory union dues
Four decades ago the Supreme Court held that public employee unions could negotiate with government about “fair share” agreements requiring all workers to pay for the costs of representation (Abood v. Detroit Board of Education). This holding went off the tracks in its characterization of both unions and First Amendment jurisprudence. Furthermore, in the case before the court Monday (Janus v.
