The Case for the Conventional
Humanity is in a crisis, quite a few, in fact: global inequality, racial and ethnic conflict, the alarming rate of climate change, and a pervasive mistrust of the institutions that inform and organize our lives. On top of these multiple social, political, and spiritual crises, we face a deep epistemological crisis, doubting our ability to distinguish valid knowledge from fantasy and false imagination.

Snowy white textiles, collectible art and carefully curated antiques don’t usually mix with the patter of little feet, but in this Bethesda home the elegant setting doesn’t hinder playtime one bit. Quite the opposite: In the library, the smooth curves of a sculpture by Stephanie Bachiero have become an unexpected jungle gym for two youngsters-in-residence. “No surface was so precious as to be off-limits,” says interior designer Darryl Carter.
Tricycle: The Buddhist Review
Making Sense of Mind Only: Why Yogacara Buddhism Matters by William S. Waldron Wisdom Publications, November 2023, 192 pp., $29.95, paper The teachings of the Yogacara school are notoriously hard to explain. The influence of the Yogacarins, known for their deep meditative practices and thorough exploration of the dharmic understanding of consciousness, cannot be overstated.

What is Dependent Arising?
The formula of dependent arising depicts both the long-term process of rebirth and the short-term cognitive processes that perpetuate it—the two are closely intertwined. Although we find many variations in the early texts, the series with twelve limbs soon became standard. This is the version illustrated in the wheel of becoming (bhavacakra) on monastic walls throughout Buddhist Asia.

A demilune table and Zoffany wall covering define the vestibule. The dining room features vintage chairs from France and a Bernhard Rohne credenza in patinated bronze. In the study, rich textures and metallic accents prevail. A custom rug, vintage chandeliers and metallic wallpaper unify multiple seating areas in the gracious double parlor. French club chairs with burled backs, circa 1935, are among the owner’s favorite finds.

Appearances can be deceiving. Behind its austere, khaki façade, an 1870s row house departs from Georgetown’s traditional aesthetic to celebrate Old World train travel—notably, the Orient Express—and the swank elegance of a 1930s men’s club. Moody and dramatic yet modern and functional, the interiors are a coherent expression of owner Greg Jackson’s vision and passion, shared by his designer, Lorna Gross, for the streamlined shapes, rich textures and exotic materials of the Art Deco period.

Peek Inside Sasha Bikoff’s Serene Hamptons Retreat
The words Sasha Bikoff uses to describe her beachfront retreat in the Springs, a storied enclave of East Hampton, normally wouldn’t raise an eyebrow. “I wanted something reflective of a modern barn,” says the interior designer and New York native, adding, “something very pure, like a white church with a high-pitched roof.” But this is Sasha Bikoff we’re talking about.
Bayonet Training
“Bayonet Training” from Elements of Trench Warfare by William Henry Waldron, 1917. The system of Bayonet Training stated herein is taken from the provisional Manual of Bayonet Training of the British Army. In the vernacular of the day, it is the "real dope." Every battalion should have a bayonet assault practice course constructed along the lines indicated and the work of training should be systematically conducted.
Tour a Historic Georgetown Town House Inspired by the Orient Express
When Washington, D.C.-based interior designer Lorna Gross was asked to overhaul a historic 1870 row house in the upscale Georgetown neighborhood, she expected the usual challenges that come with marrying a 19th-century structure with modern sensibilities. What she didn't expect was a client who arrived with some unconventional ideas of his own.
Uncleared snow makes sidewalks treacherous for the most vulnerable people - Active Transportation Alliance
Jan 12, 2024 | by Active Trans Winter in Chicagoland means clearing those sidewalks of snow so that pedestrians have safe walkways to traverse during the winter. Shoveling sidewalks is not only the neighborly thing to do, but it’s also the law in some places, including Chicago. While we strongly support the effort to make sidewalk snow removal in Chicago a municipal service, snow removal—for now—continues to be the responsibility of the property owner.
Go Inside a Revitalized Architectural Marvel in Southampton
Interior designers often find inspiration in the architectural style of the properties they are renovating. But in the case of this oceanfront home in Southampton, the architecture was so distinctive that it would have been impossible not to acquiesce to it. “I let the house tell me what it needed,” says Manhattan-based designer Wesley Moon.

Mix-and-match decor: In with the old ... and in with the new
This photo shows a design project in New York by Ike Kligerman Barkley blending vintage and modern furniture. Here, the new: a blue and grey wool and silk carpet, and creamy boucle sofas. The old: "Pairs of smaller, bolder pieces - 1920s Swedish black lacquer side chairs, and 1930s mahogany slipper chairs," says designer Elizabeth Sesser, who worked on the project. The finished look is elegant and cohesive. William Waldron {{summary}} You don't have any notifications.

AD100 Peter Pennoyer Architects and Reed Hilderbrand Craft an Art-Filled Oasis
It's a sunny summer afternoon in Ohio, and our host, a house-proud art collector, has taken to the fields. Across a meadow he goes, guiding me and his architect, Peter Pennoyer, single file into the forest and along a sharp ravine. The songs of bobolinks and the rush of the river break our silence as we continue down the narrow path, which remains uncannily level—a constant elevation of 950 feet.
Bette Midler's New York Restoration Project Nurtures a Multipurpose Bronx Community Garden
Long used by residents in ad hoc fashion, one particular empty lot in the Bronx’s Morrisania neighborhood had “always been a magnet,” says Bette Midler, the founder of the New York Restoration Project, the green-space organization that has been revitalizing woebegone urban plots since 1995. Today, thanks to the NYRP, that unprepossessing acreage is now Fannie’s Garden at Paradise on Earth, a 13,000-square-foot public living room.

Darren Henault Devises a Bucolic Hudson Valley Hideaway for His Family
In the abstract, the idea of a 53-acre Christmas-tree farm with a reasonably intact 1800 farmhouse in the Hudson Valley sounds utterly charming. The reality of transforming such a picturesque spread into a gracious family compound geared for 21st-century life is another matter altogether.
8 Beautiful Homes of AD's Favorite Celebrity Couples | Architectural Digest
There are couple goals, and then there are design couple goals, and these beautiful homes of these eight famous pairs may be the creme de la creme in that department. Whether we're imagining Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber lounging in the open-air living room of their Los Cabos, Mexico, villa or Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady sprawling on the neutral-colored sofa in the gorgeous master bedroom of their Los Angeles estate, each idea is more enviable than the next.
Brooke Shields’s Luxurious Townhouse in New York City | Architectural Digest
This article originally appeared in the March 2012 issue of Architectural Digest. Brooke Shields has packed more professional accomplishment into her 40-some-odd years than many people twice her age, though it helps that she started modeling as an infant, acting at nine (she was 11 when she played the title role in Louis Malle’s Pretty Baby ), and that, at 14, she became the youngest cover girl in *Vogue’*s history.
Step Inside John Legend and Chrissy Teigen’s New York City Home | Architectural Digest
In the pantheon of celebrity couples, few come across as more open and engaging than singer-songwriter John Legend and his wife, model Chrissy Teigen. Theirs is a romance, after all, that feels intimately familiar to fans of his music. (His recent hit love song “All of Me,” as a case in point, was dedicated to her.) Scenes from their lives, moreover, unfold hour by hour on Teigen’s wonderfully uncensored Instagram feed, now more than a million followers strong.
Derek Lam’s Airy Manhattan Home | Architectural Digest
This article originally appeared in the September 2015 issue of Architectural Digest. By now Derek Lam and Jan-Hendrik Schlottmann have learned a lot about working together. After all, they’ve been partners in life and work for well over a decade, spending a dozen years running Lam’s influential fashion label, the past three years as a married couple. “Our motto has been ‘Divide and conquer,’” Lam says.
Escape to Bunny Williams and John Rosselli's Majestic Seaside Home | Architectural Digest
Preparing for my early February trip to Punta Cana required some foresight: trekking to my building's basement to extract my favorite summer clothes, getting a bikini wax and pedicure, searching for TSA-friendly-sized mosquito repellent and SPF 50 sunblock—and figuring out how to fit into my carry-on the king-size green vinyl mosquito net my husband ordered online and insisted I take with me as a defense against Zika virus. And I had to do my research.
Edie Parker Founder Brett Heyman’s Connecticut Home | Architectural Digest
This article originally appeared in the September 2015 issue of Architectural Digest. Parenting, entrepreneur Brett Heyman says, is not unlike creating a business and then nurturing the right culture for growth and success. Quality family time is key.
See How a Hamptons Weekend House Becomes a Minimalist Retreat | Architectural Digest
This article originally appeared in the December 2011 issue of Architectural Digest. Four years ago Vincent Herbert, CEO of the Belgian bakery chain Le Pain Quotidien, and his wife, Laurence Verbeke, spent a few nights at Hegia, an 18th-century French farmhouse turned bed-and-breakfast in the foothills of the Pyrenees.
Toshiko Mori Transforms a Hudson Valley Home Into a Modern Work-of-Art | Architectural Digest
So almost a decade ago, when Sean and his wife, Mary, bought a 16-acre plot north of New York City because of its spectacular Hudson Valley views, he envisioned building a house that, like a work of art, would reveal itself gradually and in unexpected ways. From the outside it would have the ephemeral quality of a cloud passing by.
A Tudor Revival Home in Washington, D.C. is Updated to Exude a Contemporary Attitude | Architectural Digest
Serenity is not a quality generally associated with Washington, D.C., a city frequently defined by clamoring lobbyists and heated debates. Perhaps that helps explain why many style-conscious denizens of the nation’s capital and its metropolitan area crave local interior designer Darryl Carter’s low-key approach. “I’m all about hush,” the tastemaker says.
Jamie Drake Adds His Signature Colorful Style to a Gilded Age Apartment in Manhattan | Architectural Digest
Jamie Drake is all about color. The interior designer’s work has many facets, but curious minds mostly want to grill him about his frisky palettes. What’s the secret behind pairing lavender and orange so artfully? How can a prissy pink look so masculine? The Manhattan-based tastemaker is synonymous with punchy, saturated hues: audacious yellows, luminous blues, reds so fiery they might burst into flame.
Look Inside Robert Duffy's Historic Manhattan Townhouse | Architectural Digest
In the universe of fashion, Robert Duffy looms large. For starters, the president of Marc Jacobs is an imposing physical presence, standing six foot three. Also, he’s not exactly known for his shrinking personality. And as Jacobs’s consigliere and business partner for three decades, Duffy has been a driving force behind the designer’s rise as one of the world’s foremost interpreters and purveyors of chic.

Bette Midler's Lush Manhattan Penthouse and Garden
Bette Midler, the showbiz force of nature also known as the Divine Miss M, is spellbound by artisanal footnotes, those subtle details that are testaments to the human touch. Finely spaced stitches that secure a delicately ruffled lampshade to its metal skeleton. Fingerprints that bear witness to the intimate relationship between a potter and his clay. The poignant imperfections—smudges, saturations, overlaps—that occur when fabrics and wallpapers are stenciled or blocked one motif at a time.

This article originally appeared in the March 2016 issue of Architectural Digest. As anyone who has ever undertaken a home-construction project knows, setting a completion date you can count on is tricky.

The tabletop sculpture at far left is by Martin Megna.

This has been the year of everything,” actor David Burtka says of the past 12 months with his husband, actor Neil Patrick Harris. He’s not kidding: In 2014 Harris wrapped the ninth and final season of the CBS hit show How I Met Your Mother and earned a Tony Award for his Broadway star turn in the lead role of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
Stop Everything and Tour Neil Patrick Harris' Harlem Home
Flawless dream dads Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka have finally opened their Harlem townhouse up to Architectural Digest. They bought it in July of 2013—paying $3.6M, the most anyone ever had for a place in Harlem—and only moved in last June, after undertaking a year-long renovation, but honestly, every second we had to wait to have a look inside was a second too long.

Tour Bruce Shostak’s Federal-Style Home
This article originally appeared in the June 2013 issue of Architectural Digest. If architecture could be compared to dance, the Federal Style house known as Hillstead, in the Hudson Valley town of Claverack, New York, would be a quadrille. Crisp, elegant, and symmetrical, the home’s formality is relieved, like the dance itself, by idiosyncratic flourishes that heighten its individuality.
Look Inside a Light-Filled Manhattan Loft Equipped for Entertaining
This article originally appeared in the September 2012 issue of Architectural Digest. The Flatiron District can be a somewhat forbidding corner of Manhattan. Even after decades of development, the neighborhood maintains a gritty penumbra of its past life as a locus of manufacturing. The buildings there are stern and glowering, with thickly ornamented façades of brick, stone, and iron.
Jeffrey Bilhuber Revamps an 1870s Brownstone in Manhattan
This article originally appeared in the February 2012 issue of Architectural Digest. When Jenny and Trey Laird first set foot in the Manhattan townhouse that would become their family’s primary residence, they found it little changed from the 1870s, when the handsome four-story property was constructed a few blocks from Gracie Mansion by the Astor family, then preeminent real-estate developers. Marble fireplaces were intact, as were hefty moldings.
