Mad for the feathers
I like this book. A lot. And I like the author. I don’t know her, but I like the way she writes. And it’s lovely to read a book you like, written by someone whose name sounds like a nom de plume, or as my aunty (an avid birder) used to say, a Nundah plum. Libby Robin is the perfect name for an author of a book about birds and birders — or birdos, as she delightfully calls Australian bird fanciers.

Australians are already feeling the squeeze with surging petrol prices, but oil is still below record highs - for now
Image: Scott Barbour/Getty Images Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has seen oil prices surge off the back of sanctions. The average price of unleaded petrol in Australia is now above $2 a litre. JPMorgan warns the price of Brent crude could hit $US185 a barrel if disruptions to Russian supply continue. Visit Business Insider Australia’s homepage for more stories.
Yes, I’m not Arab
Reading Time: 4 minutes PHOTO: Giovanni Portelli By William McInnes How soft evangelisation led an Anglo Aussie into the Maronite Church At 25 years old I was baptised into the Maronite Catholic Church. Adult baptisms aren’t particularly common in the Eastern Rite churches, especially for someone who isn’t marrying into the faith and even more rare for someone like me, with no ancestral heritage outside of the United Kingdom.
A very William McInnes Christmas
William returns with stories and reminiscences of the Christmases of his childhood. Under the tree would be K-Tel gadgets and pop albums, bottles of cheap aftershave and perfume, and a Christmas stocking stuffed with small toys, an orange and a jar of pickled onions. William also recounts his brief but brilliant career as a department store Santa, and a stint as the world's tallest elf.
Author and actor William McInnes
Somewhere, somehow you have probably encountered William McInnes. You may have watched him acting on television on shows like Sea Change or Blue Heelers, or seen him on stage. Or maybe you have read some of his writing - books like A Man's Got To Have a Hobby or Worse Things Happen at Sea, co-written with his late wife Sarah Watt. William was born in Queensland and has been busy while self isolating - he spoke to presenter Rob Mailer about what he's been up to and to also share a few laughs.
William McInnes on being a dad
William is one of Australia's best-known storytellers and actors. As his children became adults, he began to reflect on what it means to be a father. William’s dad was a gregarious character, a veteran of World War II, who ran a hire business in Queensland. Despite the many colourful names his father coined for him, William remembers his dad as a very loving father, even when he, William, might have been 'a boofhead'.
William McInnes went bra shopping for his teenage daughter. It didn't end well.
parent opinion Being a father out shopping can lead to a more perilous realisation about how the society we live in sees your child. It’s easy to be a snob, but it’s so utterly human to want to impress and pretend. I looked at my daughter and her friend. Both gorgeous young people. When I was their age, girls would slather themselves in tanning oil and fry their skin like dim sims in the sun, just because it looked good.
Torino beat out Serie A debutants Sassuolo - Serie A Match Report
Torino proved to be a cut above Sassuolo, downing the visitors 2-0. It was Sassuolo’s first match in Serie A ever but the historic game did not end in victory. A late first half goal from Matteo Brighi followed by a second half strike by Alessio Cerci saw the Il Toro secure a good first round victory. A scoreless half hour saw both teams’ trade early shots. Torino broke into the box several times, only to see the final product blocked or shot wide.
Matri returns to Milan
Alessandro Matri will join Milan until 2017 pending a medical tomorrow. The striker joins Milan after initially being a member of the club’s primavera team. The reported fee of €12 million will be comprised of an initial fee of €11 million and a €1 million bonus. He will reportedly earn a salary of €2.6 million. Matri was signed due to the injury of Giampaolo Pazzini. Milan had felt the need to sign a 3rd choice striker, feeling that youth player Andrea Petagna was not mature enough.
Everton swoop for Martins Indi
Everton swoop for Martins Indi September 2, 2013 By William McInnes Leave a Comment Everton have made a deadline day swoop for Feyenoord defender Bruno Martins Indi, as they look to bolster their defence for the coming Premier League season. The Dutch defender has been touted as one of the best up and coming defenders in the game. Throughout the transfer window, he was continually linked to big name clubs across Europe, but it looks likely he will join Everton.
Italy announces World Cup qualifying squad
Italy have announced their squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Czech Republic and Bulgaria. The squad features some regulars as well as some players not often seen in the squad. Juventus has its constant defensive presence featuring Buffon in goals and Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini in defence. Andrea Ranocchia has also been called into the squad.
Kaka returns home to Milan
Milan have confirmed the signing of Kaka today as the Brazilian midfielder returns to the club that made him famous. After a series of negotiations, Milan finally made the breakthrough, securing the 2007 Ballon d’Or winner on a free deal until 2015. The Rossoneri will of course have to pay a salary of €4,000,000 per season plus performance related bonuses, but it’s a small price for many of the Milan faithful.
Best of the A-League Weekend
With their first win of the season and first win in the A-League since January, Central Coast came from a goal down to put in an impressive performance against Adelaide United. A bad draw has seen them play just one home match in their first five games and many would not have been expecting them to get the job done against Adelaide. The team have come close, drawing twice this season against Perth and Western Sydney but couldn’t find the finishing goals.
William McInnes's Roar Profile
Two groups have announced their intention to play in the A-League, should the FFA expand the competition next season.
Young Aussie striker making big impact in Holland
The former Sydney FC youth player has already made an big impact this season, scoring four goals in as many games for the club’s under-19 side. The Young Socceroo found the back of the net twice in his opening game for his new side and has since gone on to score two more goals, including one against Sebastian Pasquali’s Ajax team. Despite only moving to Holland in September, the teen has already played a crucial role in the under-19 team, scoring four of the side’s 10 goals this season.
Best of the A-League Weekend
We’ve known for the past five rounds that Sydney have something special to give this season but their performances over the past three weeks were lacking slightly. Barely scraping past Wellington, and conceding their first goal of the season against Victory last weekend, Sydney were out to deliver big time and they did just that. Perth started the stronger team but Sydney held out well, with Danny Vukovic determined to keep yet another clean sheet this season.
Hernandez eager to escape Serie B with Arsenal
Palermo forward Abel Hernandez could be the subject of a late bid from Arsenal as the English side look to make a series of late signings. Palermo who are said to be dealing with Arsenal regarding goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano, are facing a loss of players as the higher valued players are keen to escape a division in Serie B. Hernandez, who had to deal with a serious cruciate ligament injury last season, managed only 14 appearances, scoring only one goal in Serie A, despite playing as a striker.

U.S. Sassuolo will play their first Serie A match ever against F.C. Torino after winning the 2012-13 Serie B tournament. Torino themselves were only promoted last year, barely escaping relegation after finishing 16th in the 2012-13 Serie A. Match Preview: Sassuolo are playing in Serie A for the first time in their 91 year history.

In the English Premier League, Adam Federici was an unused substitute for Bournemouth as they lost 2-1 to Sunderland.
AC Milan's youthful future will lead the way
AC Milan, a team once known for being a team of legends and superstars, is no longer what it used to be. The financial strain faced by the club meant that they had to make big decisions in regards to the club’s future and direction. At the start of last season, they announced a new youth project for the club, mirroring the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona in a bid to produce top players within the club.
Matri to return to Milan
Alessandro Matri has been linked with a move to the Italian giants following the injury of Giampaolo Pazzini. Whilst it was originally discussed that such a signing would not be needed due to Andrea Petagna’s promotion to the first team squad, sources are reporting that CEO Adriano Galliani and coach Massimiliano Allegri are now looking for a suitable back up to first choice striker Mario Balotelli.

Milan Transfer Review - The Young and the Old move for Milan
The transfer window for Milan was good for many reasons and a bit disappointing for others. A series of younger player were injected into the squad early, taking part in pre-season games and also making their presence felt. Towards the middle of the transfer window, a series of injury replacements were bought in as over six players had relatively long term injuries.
Udinese manage win over Parma - Serie A Match Report

Parma had long periods where they looked to be on top of the game, but Udinese’s defence and counter-attacking got the better of the Udinese and Parma started well for both teams with each getting a generous share of the ball. Udinese pushed the ball better but coulnd’t break into the box to secure the final ball.
Ref rows, golazos and floundering Reds: It's the best of the A-League
I know it’s going to sound a bit controversial but, despite dropping points, Sydney FC still had the performance of the weekend. It’s not so much that they were clearly the best, but rather, who else would you give it to?
Luca Antonini to leave Milan after 13 years
Long term Milan full back Luca Antonini could be seeing the last of the Rossoneri after Milan made it quite clear there is no room in the squad for him. Turkish clubs Besiktas and Trabzonspor have been heavily linked with the full back as well as Italian clubs Torino and Sampdoria.
Brazil vs Australia - International Preview
Australia will take on Brazil in a friendly this Saturday as both teams have successfully achieved qualification to next year’s FIFA World Cup, Brazil through hosting and Australia through the AFC Qualification process. Brazil has named a squad which is almost identical to the one they are expected to name for next year’s World Cup with plenty of big name European players as well as domestic talent.

Telstra wanted someone removed from a store, but police took the customers' side and solved his NBN problems
When Matt Dooley refused to leave a Telstra store after months of battling with the telco, the last people he might have expected to fix his problem were the police called to remove him from the store. Having spent hours on the phone to Telstra trying to get his NBN connection properly installed, he had had enough and staged an impromptu sit-in at the Marrickville Metro store.
