New molecule could make metal recovery cleaner and more efficient
Recovering valuable metals from electronic waste, mining streams and industrial waste typically requires large quantities of chemical reagents. Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have developed a new molecule that could replace much of that chemistry with electricity – a fundamental advance that could potentially make metal recovery cleaner, simpler and more energy efficient.

The α2A-adrenergic receptor on Tfh cells amplifies allergic airway inflammation via Akt signaling
Abstract Allergic airway inflammation involves complex neuro‑immune interactions, yet the role of α2A‑adrenergic receptors (α2AR, encoded by Adra2a) in Tfh development and type 2 immunity remains poorly defined. HDM‑induced asthma model was established in C57BL/6 mice. RNA‑sequencing, correlation analysis, flowcytometry, immunofluorescence, and pharmacological interventions were used. Il33 knockout mice and T‑cell‑specific Adra2a or Akt1 knockout mice were generated.

Depletion of macrophages during early postnatal development leads to disrupted tooth root development and altered Gli1⁺ MSC trajectory
Abstract Mammalian tooth development progresses through two principal stages-crown formation and root development-orchestrated by intricate interactions between the oral epithelium and neural crest-derived mesenchyme. After crown formation, Hertwig’s epithelial root sheath (HERS) directs root development. In this phase, Gli1⁺ mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) give rise to dental pulp, dentin, cementum, and the periodontal ligament (PDL).
Mutations of schizophrenia risk gene SETD1A dysregulate synaptic function in human neurons - Molecular Psychiatry
Abstract Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder associated with both common risk variants of small effect sizes and rare risk variants of high penetrance. Rare premature open reading frame (ORF) termination variants in SETD1A (SET Domain Containing 1A) show a strong association with SCZ; however, it remains largely unclear how rare premature ORF termination variants in SETD1A contribute to the pathophysiology of SCZ.
Viability of low solar efficiency materials for photoelectrochemical separations via thermodynamic modeling - Nature Communications
Abstract Photoelectrochemical systems harness onsite solar energy to drive chemical processes, enabling improvements in sustainability and decarbonization. Photoelectrochemical systems have been extensively studied for reactions such as hydrogen production; however, competitive costs are difficult to attain due to the limited solar efficiency of low-cost photoelectrochemically stable materials.

A novel water‐based mechanochemical approach for surface modification of graphene platelets and their epoxy nanocomposites
1 INTRODUCTION Graphene, a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice structure, is a highly regarded material owing to its exceptional properties such as lightweight, large specific area, high Young's modulus and excellent electrical and thermal conductivity.1-5 Despite these advantages, its high production cost remains a significant barrier, which particularly limits its widespread use in cost-sensitive applications such as polymer nanocomposites.
Live-Cell Quantification Reveals Viscoelastic Regulation of Synapsin Condensates by α-Synuclein
Abstract Synapsin and α-synuclein represent a growing list of condensate-forming proteins where the material states of condensates are directly linked to cellular functions (e.g., neurotransmission) and pathology (e.g., neurodegeneration). However, quantifying condensate material properties in living systems has been a significant challenge.

Extracting green gold, PGMs from waste
Scientists at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have developed a cleaner and more efficient method of recovering gold and platinum group metals (PGMs) from electronic waste and other discarded materials. Even though it costs anywhere from $925 to $4,500 to buy just one ounce of these precious metals, gold and PGMs have special properties that make them worth their high price for electronics and clean energy technologies.
Cullin5 drives experimental asthma exacerbations by modulating alveolar macrophage antiviral immunity - Nature Communications
Abstract Asthma exacerbations caused by respiratory viral infections are a serious global health problem. Impaired antiviral immunity is thought to contribute to the pathogenesis, but the underlying mechanisms remain understudied. Here using mouse models we find that Cullin5 (CUL5), a key component of Cullin-RING E3 ubiquitin ligase 5, is upregulated and associated with increased neutrophil count and influenza-induced exacerbations of house dust mite-induced asthma.

Admission NLPR predicts long-term mortality in patients with acute ischemic stroke: A retrospective analysis of the MIMIC-III database
PLOS ONE, Aug 2023 Background The neutrophil to lymphocyte*platelet ratio (NLPR) is a new index based on platelets, neutrophils, and lymphocytes associated with the prognosis of patients with infectious diseases and cancer. However, its use in acute ischemic stroke has rarely been reported. This study examined the relationship between levels of systemic immunoinflammatory indices at admission and patient outcomes at different times after onset to assess stroke prognosis by NLPR.

Living Beyond A Life Well-Lived
The crowd jostles as soon as the minibus screeches to a stop. Men and women of all ages, some carrying produce or backpacks, surge toward the small door, shoving others aside as they struggle to be the first to climb aboard. Those already on the bus peer expressionless through the open windows, the dust of the rural road permeating the humid air. Just another morning commute into Iringa, in the central highlands of Tanzania.

This study investigated the dietary patterns and their related factors and association with postpartum weight retention (PPWR) in Chinese puerperal women. Participants were from the mother–infant cohort study, in which both mothers and infants were followed up from childbirth to the next 2 years, in seven cities around China.
Krill oil extract suppresses the proliferation of colorectal cancer cells through activation of caspase 3/9
Abstract Background Currently available treatments for colorectal cancer (CRC) associate with numerous side-effects that reduce patients’ quality of life. The effective nutraceuticals with high anti-proliferative efficacy and low side-effects are desirable. Our previous study has reported that free fatty acids extract (FFAE) of krill oil induced apoptosis of CRC cells, possibly associated with changes in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP).
