Results Although lactate can serve as an energy substrate and a precursor for protein lactylation that promotes tumor progression, whether its intracellular level is tightly controlled remains unknown. Intriguingly, we observed that elevated expression of the lactate exporter MCT4 correlates with poorer patient survival across multiple cancer types (Figure 1A). This suggests a selective pressure in aggressive tumors to prevent excess intracellular lactate accumulation.
