1 Introduction Constipation is gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction characterized by disorders in intestinal motility, abnormalities in enteric neural function, and delayed colonic transit, leading to difficult defecation. Epidemiological data indicate adult constipation prevalence ranges between 12% and 19%, with higher rates of 30%–40% in the elderly population; additionally, the incidence rate in women is approximately twice that in men (Vlismas et al., 2024; Erhardt et al., 2023).
