The ozone layer’s recovery shows how to protect the planet
By Robert Redford and Xiye Bastida / NEW YORK There was a time, not so long ago, when the depletion of Earth’s ozone layer seemed like an insurmountable challenge. Decades of using harmful chemicals, such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), threatened to cause irreparable damage to our planet. Without swift action, we faced the risk of climate destabilization, ecosystem collapse and the breakdown of our food system. Consequences that were once almost unthinkable became painfully real.

How To Create A Culture Shift: Xiye Bastida
When I gave the closing speech at the World Leaders Summit at COP26 last year, most of the world leaders had already left. Standing backstage beforehand, I’d heard Prime Minister Modi of India and various heads of state speak and thought, ‘This is it, next they’re going to be listening to me.’ After an announcement that an Indigenous Mexican youth activist was giving the closing speech, I went on stage and the room was practically empty.

This is the question I get asked most often. Love that so many people are asking! For years I just said, “I don’t know, what are you good at?” Because so often the climate movement asks everyone to do the same things (march, vote, donate, spread the word — and YES, do those things!), but fails to ask us to each bring our superpowers, our magic. And then I added, “It’s not about what you can do, it’s about what we can do.” Find your crew, your climate squad. You can’t do this alone.

Indigenous wisdom can heal the planet
For many, the recent celebration of Mother’s Day was a chance to reconnect with our love for life and reflect on that which binds us together as human beings. And now more than ever before in human history, we need to take moments such as Mother’s Day and the upcoming World Environment Day on June 5 to express our gratitude to our collective mother: Mother Earth. “Mother Earth is crying for her human children… she has lived for billions of years, and she’ll live for more.
