Ruth Foote, a veteran Acadiana journalist, has died. She had been battling cancer. An avid lover of the arts, history and culture, Ruth documented the region’s people and events with empathy and curiosity. First reporting for the Opelousas Daily World, she went on to contribute to many local publications, including The Advocate and The Current. “She was a wealth of knowledge and a great resource,” says musician and cultural advocate Erica Melancon Fox. “She was everybody’s cheerleader.

Zydeco legend Lee Allen Zeno has died

Lee Allen Zeno, a master of zydeco and R&B bass, died Sunday after a long bout with cancer. He was 71. The Grammy winner was a first-call bass player for household names. He toured with Buckwheat Zydeco and played with Marcia Ball, Carol Fran, Irma Thomas and countless others. He was born in Carencro in 1954, and played on stage from a young age, joining his cousin’s band, Clifton Zeno and the Hiphuggers, at just seven years old. The time to celebrate Zeno is now.

One Lafayette student dead, two injured in Mall of Louisiana shooting

Martha Odom, one of three Ascension Episcopal Students struck Thursday as bystanders to a gunfight at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, has died. She was 17. In a social media post, Ascension leadership identified Odom, asking for prayers and consolation, and noted the two other students injured in the shootout are recovering. The group of five students, including two who were not hit, were visiting the mall on senior skip day.
