Research on API among medical interns remains limited. This study applies social cognitive theory (SCT) to explore the formation mechanism of API in Chinese medical interns and proposes strategies to enhance professional identity.

1 Background Hypertension and diabetes are two common chronic diseases that present major challenges for health systems [1, 2]. Their effective management is pivotal for mitigating cardiovascular and renal risks, yet rural areas encounter significant hurdles in achieving optimal control [3]. More than 270 million people are living with hypertension in China, and the recorded prevalence of diabetes has risen more than tenfold from less than 1% in 1980 to 12.8% in 2017 [4, 5].

This growing trend presents significant challenges for health systems, including resource allocation, funding distribution, and the ability to adequately address the needs of patients and the public. To address this, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target 3.4 aims to reduce mortality from NCDs by one-third by 2030 [].
