Can Irrigation or Rain Clear Wildfire Smoke?
By Sarah Zeiler and Dr. Xufei Yang When wildfire smoke fills the air, many people wonder if spraying irrigation water or waiting for rain will help clear the smoke away. It seems like a simple solution. After all, water can wash dust and dirt out of the air. However, scientists have found that rain and water spraying are usually not very effective at removing the tiny particles found in wildfire smoke. The reason has to do with the size of smoke particles.
Dairy Spotlight: Xufei Yang
Xufei Yang, Ph.D., recently joined MSU as a faculty member in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering and the Department of Animal Science. Prior to his appointment at MSU in August 2025, he served as a faculty member and Extension Environmental Quality Engineer at South Dakota State University (SDSU). He earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural and Biological Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Energy recovery and saving in municipal wastewater treatment engineering practices - Nature Sustainability
Abstract Municipal wastewater treatment (MWT) plays a critical role in safeguarding aquatic ecosystems but is highly energy intensive. Assessing the energy recovery and saving potential of MWT technologies is essential to propel the sustainable transformation of this sector.
Heart failure in two male patients with late‐onset Fabry mutation (IVS4 + 919G > A)
Introduction Fabry disease is a metabolic disorder that can affect multiple organ systems, with the heart being one of the most commonly affected organs, particularly in late-onset cases. The prevalence of Fabry disease may be as high as 10% in patients with unexplained myocardial hypertrophy. Diagnosis relies on specific screening tests and genetic testing; however, misdiagnosis rates are high, leading to many patients being identified only after significant cardiac impairment has occurred.
Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis for Optimizing CO2 and NH3 Removal by Scenedesmus dimorphus Photobioreactors
Abstract : Numerous technologies have been investigated for mitigating air pollutant emissions from swine barns. Among them, algal photobioreactors (PBRs) can remove and utilize air pollutants such as CO2 and NH3 from barn exhaust. However, a challenge to PBR operation is that it involves multiple system input parameters and output goals. A key question is then how to determine the appropriate CO2 and NH3 concentrations in this case.
Wind Damage to Pole Barns: Things To Know
By Xufei Yang The May 12 derecho devastated eastern South Dakota, causing significant damage to agricultural structures, including post-frame buildings also known as pole barns. In this article, we intend to compile the information about pole barn wind damage and share some useful links with producers. Wind Load and Preventive Measures for Wind Damage When properly designed and constructed, a pole barn can withstand high winds pretty well.
A Low-Cost Solution To Remote Monitoring of Animal Facility Thermal Environments
By Xufei Yang An appropriate thermal environment (temperature and humidity) is critical for animal growth and health. During very hot days, animals may suffer from heat stress, causing the loss of appetite, poor growth performance and increased mortality and morbidity; whereas cold temperatures may result in increased feed intake, a reduced growth rate and a decreased feed-to-meat conversion efficiency. In confinement barns, the thermal environment is regulated primarily by ventilation.

Optical Dust Meters May Misestimate Dust Concentrations in Animal Barns
By Xufei Yang and Ryan Samuel et.al Dust is a major air quality issue associated with livestock facilities. In an animal barn, dust particles can originate from feeds, feces, and beddings, and can reach a very high concentration when animals are active, ventilation is poor, and/or feeding systems are running. Dust also represents a potential safety and health risk factor for caretakers in barns.
