Directional Pumping of Coherent Phonons and Quasiparticle Renormalization in a Dirac Nodal-Line Semimetal
Many material properties are governed by how electrons interact with phonons—quantized vibrations of the atomic lattice. In equilibrium, these vibrations have random phases and any phase-sensitive effects on material properties are thermally smeared out. There, the electron-phonon interactions can be well understood using standard theories.
Imaging phonon-mediated hydrodynamic flow in WTe2
In the presence of interactions, electrons in condensed-matter systems can behave hydrodynamically, exhibiting phenomena associated with classical fluids, such as vortices and Poiseuille flow1–3. In most conductors, electron–electron interactions are minimized by screening effects, hindering the search for hydrodynamic materials; however, recently, a class of semimetals has been reported to exhibit prominent interactions4,5.
Ab Initio Self-Trapped Excitons
We propose a new formalism and an effective computational framework to study self-trapped excitons (STEs) in insulators and semiconductors from first principles. Using the many-body Bethe-Salpeter equation in combination with perturbation theory, we are able to obtain the mode- and momentum-resolved exciton-phonon coupling matrix element in a perturbative scheme and explicitly solve the real space localization of the electron (hole), as well as the lattice distortion.
Observation of phonon Stark effect - Nature Communications
Abstract Stark effect, the electric-field analogue of magnetic Zeeman effect, is one of the celebrated phenomena in modern physics and appealing for emergent applications in electronics, optoelectronics, as well as quantum technologies. While in condensed matter it has prospered only for excitons, whether other collective excitations can display Stark effect remains elusive. Here, we report the observation of phonon Stark effect in a two-dimensional quantum system of bilayer 2H-MoS2.
Three-stage ultrafast demagnetization dynamics in a monolayer ferromagnet - Nature Communications
Abstract Intense laser pulses can be used to demagnetize a magnetic material on an extremely short timescale. While this ultrafast demagnetization offers the potential for new magneto-optical devices, it poses challenges in capturing coupled spin-electron and spin-lattice dynamics.

Bckdk‐Mediated Branch Chain Amino Acid Metabolism Reprogramming Contributes to Muscle Atrophy during Cancer Cachexia
Muscle-specific Bckdk-cKO mice are generated through crossbreeding of Bckdkf/f mice with Myf5Cre mice. Lewis lung cancer (LLC) tumor transplantation is used to establish the cancer cachexia model. The occurrence of cancer cachexia is accelerated in the muscle-specific Bckdk-cKO mice after bearing LLC tumor. Wasting skeletal muscle is characterized by increased protein ubiquitination degradation and impaired protein synthesis.
Unraveling Hidden Charge Density Wave Phases in $1T\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{TiSe}}_{2}$
The unexpected chiral order observed in 1T−TiSe2 represents an exciting area to explore chirality in condensed matter, while its microscopic mechanism remains elusive. Here, we have identified three metastable collective modes—the so-called single-q modes—in single layer TiSe2, which originate from the unstable phonon eigenvectors at the zone boundary and break the threefold rotational symmetry.
[2303.11683] Lu-H-N phase diagram from first-principles calculations
Using a comprehensive structure search and high-throughput first-principles calculations of 1483 compounds, this study presents the phase diagram of Lu-H-N. The formation energy landscape of Lu-H-N was derived and utilized to assess the thermodynamic stability of compounds.
Synthesis of Long-Subchain Hyperbranched Polypropylene Using Thermally Degraded Products as Precursor
A new strategy to access long-subchain hyperbranched polypropylene (LHB-PP) has been established, starting from the thermally degraded polypropylene (PP) possessing two-terminal vinylidene double bonds of isopropenyl end groups (PP-TVD). PP-TVD reacts with hydrogen bromide (HBr) with high efficiency, followed by a substitution reaction with sodium azide to yield azide-terminated PP (PP-N3).

Evidence for Dominant Phonon-Electron Scattering in Weyl Semimetal ${\mathrm{WP}}_{2}$
Abstract Topological semimetals have revealed a wide array of novel transport phenomena, including electron hydrodynamics, quantum field theoretic anomalies, and extreme magnetoresistances and mobilities. However, the scattering mechanisms central to the fundamental transport properties remain largely unexplored. Here, we reveal signatures of significant phonon-electron scattering in the type-II Weyl semimetal WP2 via temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy.
Synthesis, Structural, and Electronic Properties of Sr1-xCaxPdAs
Synthesis, Structural, and Electronic Properties of Sr1-xCaxPdAs Layered honeycomb intermetallic phases have attracted considerable research interest due to the wide array of exciting physical properties inherent in these materials. Here, we follow the evolution in structure and electronic properties of a relatively unexplored material system, Sr1-xCaxPdAs, as the hexagonal PdAs honeycomb layer in SrPdAs distorts into the orthorhombic CaPdAs structure.
The Chemical Design Principles for Axis-Dependent Conduction Polarity
The recent discovery that specific materials can simultaneously exhibit n-type conduction and p-type conduction along different directions of the single crystal has the potential to impact a broad range of electronic and energy-harvesting technologies. Here, we establish the chemical design principles for creating materials with this behavior. First, we define the single-carrier and multicarrier mechanisms for axis-dependent conduction polarity and their identifying band structure fingerprints.
Identification of Turbostratic Twisting in Germanane
Identification of Turbostratic Twisting in Germanane Germanane, a van der Waals layered material predicted to have a direct band gap and high carrier mobility, is a promising two-dimensional material with applications in optoelectronics. The electronic properties of germanane have been well studied; however, experimentally measured properties are orders of magnitude lower than predicted values, potentially limiting the future device applications.
The Fermi surface geometrical origin of axis-dependent conduction polarity in layered materials
Abstract Electronic materials generally exhibit a single isotropic majority carrier type, electrons or holes. Some superlattice1,2 and hexagonal3,4,5 materials exhibit opposite conduction polarities along in-plane and cross-plane directions due to multiple electron and hole bands. Here, we uncover a material genus with this behaviour that originates from the Fermi surface geometry of a single band. NaSn2As2, a layered metal, has such a Fermi surface.
