Ultrafast reconfigurable topological-modulators-based photonic processing accelerator
Abstract The rise of artificial intelligence has triggered exponential growth in data volume, demanding rapid and efficient processing. High-speed, energy-efficient, and parallel-scalable computing hardware is thus increasingly critical. We demonstrate a wafer-scale non-volatile photonic computing chip using topological modulators.

Abstract Non-Abelian geometric phases offer fault-tolerant unitary operations that are essential for holonomic quantum computation. While the “all-geometric” approach has successfully enabled robust control of atoms, ions, and electrons in various quantum systems, its photonic implementations have remained limited by a lack of tunability—an essential feature for modern classical or quantum optical information processing.

You have full access to this article via your institution. Most of the enormous amount of data that we generate daily needs to be transmitted before it can be shared, processed and stored.
Multi-target and ultra-high-speed optical wireless communication using a thin-film lithium niobate optical phased array - Nature Communications
Abstract Optical wireless communication (OWC) effectively addresses challenges such as radio spectrum scarcity and signal attenuation by leveraging the properties of laser beams. A major advance in this field comes from the incorporation of optical phased arrays (OPAs), which enable inertial-free, high-speed beam steering with transformative potential. In this contribution, we propose and demonstrate a multi-target and ultra-high-speed OWC system based on a thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) OPA.
Direct tensor processing with coherent light - Nature Photonics
Abstract Tensor processing is a cornerstone of many modern technological advancements, powering critical applications in data analytics and artificial intelligence. While optical computing offers exceptional advantages in bandwidth, parallelism and energy efficiency, existing methods optimized for scalar operations struggle to efficiently handle tensor-based tasks, limiting their applicability in complex applications, such as neural networks.
High-bandwidth electro-optic modulator on a hybrid silicon-nitride-lithium-tantalate platform
Integrated electro-optic modulators are key components in modern communication networks and various applications, with lithium tantalate currently being one of the most promising crystalline thin-film materials. However, direct etching of thin-film lithium tantalate (TFLT) presents challenges, particularly in achieving vertical sidewalls. In contrast, the silicon nitride (SiN) etching process has seen substantial advancements, enabling more precise vertical etching.
Miniaturized chaos-assisted Spectrometer - Light: Science & Applications
Abstract Computational spectrometers are at the forefront of spectroscopy, promising portable, on-chip, or in-situ spectrum analysis through the integration of advanced computational techniques into optical systems. However, existing computational spectrometer systems have yet to fully exploit optical properties due to imperfect spectral responses, resulting in increased system complexity and compromised performance in resolution, bandwidth, and footprint.
High-dimensional non-Abelian holonomy in integrated photonics - Nature Communications
Abstract Non-Abelian holonomy is known for the robust holonomic unitary behavior exhibited. The associated non-Abelian geometric phase is a promising approach for implementing topologically protected computation. But its realization in application-abundant platforms has been largely elusive. In particular, the observation of universal high-order matrices is difficult due to challenges from increasing the dimensions of degenerate subspace.
Miniaturized disordered photonic molecule spectrometer - Light: Science & Applications
Abstract The burgeoning field of computational spectrometers is rapidly advancing, providing a pathway to highly miniaturized, on-chip systems for in-situ or portable measurements. The performance of these systems is typically limited in its encoder section. The response matrix is largely compromised with redundancies, due to the periodic intensity or overly smooth responses.

Integrated electro-optic modulator on a lead zirconate titanate-silicon nitride heterogeneous platform
Integrated electro-optic (EO) modulators are the core components of the optoelectronic information technology, and lithium niobate is currently the most widely used crystalline thin film material; however, finite EO coefficients limit the modulation efficiency of the modulators. In this Letter, we present an integrated EO modulator using a microring resonator on the lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and silicon nitride (SiN) heterogeneous platform.

In this Letter, we report a second-order silicon photonic (SiP) coupled resonator optical waveguide (CROW) filter with an ultra-narrow 10-dB bandwidth of 1.75 GHz and a high extinction ratio (ER) of ∼50 dB. By utilizing this CROW filter, we demonstrated an innovative self-coherent detection, called carrier-extracted self-coherent (CESC) detection.

Hybrid lithium tantalite-silicon integrated photonics platform for electro-optic modulation
Integrated electro-optic modulators are key components in photonic integrated circuits. Silicon photonic technology is considered to be promising for large-scale and low-cost integration. However, silicon does not exhibit any Pockels effect, and the electro-optic modulator based on free-carrier dispersion suffers from challenges such as high-power consumption, limited bandwidth, and large optical propagation loss.

Abstract Learning-based computer-generated holography (CGH) algorithms appear as novel alternatives to generate phase-only holograms. However, most existing learning-based approaches underperform their iterative peers regarding display quality. Here, we recognize that current convolutional neural networks have difficulty learning cross-domain tasks due to the limited receptive field.
Ultra-compact and broadband silicon polarizer employing a nanohole array structure
Abstract An ultra-compact and broadband transverse magnetic (TM)-pass polarizer is experimentally demonstrated using a photonic crystal nanohole structure. By engineering the period of the circular holes, the fundamental transverse electric mode is suppressed due to the bandgap of the nanohole array, while the TM0 mode propagates with a negligible insertion loss. Simulation results predict that the bandwidth of the device can reach 245 nm with a 33 dB polarization extinction ratio (PER).

Abstract Leveraging the physical dimensions of an optical carrier (e.g., wavelength, mode, or polarization) allows significant scaling of the transmission capacity for optical communications. Here we propose a scheme for implementing on-chip silicon (de)multiplexers with simultaneous wavelength-, mode-, and polarization-division (de)multiplexing capability. The device is constructed by using cascaded subwavelength grating (SWG)-based contra-directional couplers.
