The cross-spousal spillover effects of social pensions: evidence from time use
ABSTRACT This paper examines the cross-spousal spillover effects of social pensions on time use. We exploit the temporal and geographical variation in the county-by-county rollout of China’s New Rural Pension Scheme (NRPS) in a difference-in-differences (DID) framework to identify the cross-spousal effects. We find that spousal eligibility for pension benefits significantly changed individuals’ time-use patterns, leading to less time spent working and more time spent caring and exercising.
