How is social media changing news?

While it's done great things in terms of spreading the word, it's also made less positive changes in advertising and marketing.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

#momtexts. Knowing that my own mother won't touch text messaging, seeing what other moms try to do is funny too.

Why did you become a journalist?

I wanted to harness my basic urge to tell people "did you see this?" and make it into a paying career.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Never write for just one firm. Having two or three income streams leaves you in a much less vulnerable position.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That it's nothing but gadgets. Technology covers a lot of waterfront, and some of it gets really esoteric.
