(WPTA) - Purdue Fort Wayne women’s basketball head coach Maria Marchesano has had former players go into coaching before, but never quite like this. “This is the first team that I’ve had multiple players throughout their time as a player pull me aside at one point or another and say, ‘I think I want to coach,’” said Marchesano. Four members of the recent graduating class have decided to pursue coaching right away.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Lauren Ross thought she’d only get to spend one year in the Gates Center, but now she’ll stick around a bit longer. The recent graduate moves to a new role in the women’s basketball program, joining Maria Marchesano’s coaching staff. Ross played her final college season at Purdue Fort Wayne, after transferring from Michigan State. The 5′10″ guard exceed any and all expectations, becoming the first player to lead the nation in both three-point and free throw percentage.

Head coach Maria Marchesano, her staff, and her players welcomed about 50 young players to the Gates Center fieldhouse for the annual kids camp. “It’s a lot of fun,” Marchesano said. “Our players look forward to it. I hear about it all year long in the community. That’s the cool part.
