PHOENIX — An Arizona summer is once again bringing triple-digit temperatures, and SRP is responding with a more than $1.3 million investment in heat relief for Valley residents. One of SRP's key partners in that effort is AllThrive365, whose Healthy Homes Program repairs and replaces broken air conditioning units for elderly residents and low-income families who could not otherwise afford it. Elena Burr, director of communications and outreach for AllThrive 365, said the stakes are high.

YARNELL, AZ — People filled Yarnell Hill Fire Memorial Park Tuesday afternoon as a bell tolled with each name of the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots who died 13 years ago protecting the community. Only one member of the hotshot crew survived the fire, which remains one of the deadliest wildland firefighter tragedies in American history.

Democratic socialist ousts longtime Colorado congresswoman in primary upset

Democratic socialist Melat Kiros beat U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette in a Colorado House primary Tuesday, a stunning victory for the first-time candidate against a nearly 30-year incumbent. Kiros, a former corporate attorney, is the latest democratic socialist or progressive candidate to boot a Democratic incumbent this month. With the district covering the dark blue city of Denver, Kiros is expected to win in November and reach Congress in January.

Police investigating in-custody death after incident in central Phoenix on Sunday

PHOENIX — Police are investigating after a man died in their custody after an incident in central Phoenix on Sunday. Phoenix police say they were called to the area near 44th Street and Thomas Road just after 4 p.m. for a report of an injured person. The initial information indicated that a man was acting erratically, rolling on the ground, and hurting himself. When officers got to the scene, they placed the man in handcuffs to prevent him from continuing to harm himself.

Judge issues mixed ruling in EVIT dispute with nine East Valley school districts

PHOENIX — A Maricopa County Superior Court judge issued a mixed ruling Monday in an ongoing legal dispute between the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) and nine East Valley school districts over Career and Technical Education District (CTED) funding and oversight. Judge Christopher Coury ruled that EVIT retains authority over the content and quality of CTED programs.

PHOENIX — Buying a home has always required sacrifice — but for families under 40, the math has gotten significantly harder over the past five decades. In 1970, the inflation-adjusted income of a family under 40 was $63,000. The median home price at that time was $154,000 — roughly 2.5 times that income. Today, the median family under 40 earns just over $100,000, but the median home now costs over $350,000 — about 3.5 times their income.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser wins Democratic primary for governor

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser won the Democratic nomination for governor of the state Tuesday, beating out the U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet in a race partly centered around which candidate was better at challenging President Donald Trump. Weiser became attorney general in 2019, after serving in the Justice Department under the presidential administrations of Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Weiser will be favored to win in November in the blue state.
