1. Introduction The human gastrointestinal tract hosts trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, archaea, protozoa, and viruses, the entire cluster of which is the human gut microbiota. The knowledge that microbes exist in the gut dates back centuries, but it is only in the last two decades that we have been able to depict the world of microbes inside our gastrointestinal tract and understand the immense influence that it has on the homeostasis and development of the host.
