1 Introduction The proximal phalanx of the major digit, phalanx proximalis digiti majoris, is in most cases an easily recognizable bone and relatively well preserved in fossil and archaeological deposits. Despite this, its presence is relatively rarely reported in zooarchaeological analyses, which is probably related to its small size and the need to wash and sieve all materials (Best and Mulville 2013).

A first attempt has been made to systematically present the achievements of several archaeozoological fields in Bulgaria: archaeomalacology, archaeoichthyology, archaeoherpetology, archaeoornithology, archaeomammalogy. The main results and some of the more significant studies in each of these fields are presented. It is summarized that archaeozoological studies began in the first decade of the 20th century.
