AI: ‘Is it going to destroy humankind? No. The good parts are worth pursuing’
AI may appear to be a relatively nascent development but in reality this is far from the case. John McCarthy first coined the term back in 1956, and since then we have seen IBM’s Deep Blue and Watson machines beat chess and Jeopardy champions, and Apple create its virtual assistant, Siri.
Euro Elite 2024: Switzerland - Endurance race
Switzerland’s legal market faces similar reversals to the world at large: regulatory shifts, geopolitical flux and technological advancements are keeping partners on their toes. ‘The legal market is always developing in parallel to the general economic situation,’ comments Bär & Karrer’s Susanne Schreiber, who co-heads the firm’s tax team. In Q1 2023, Switzerland’s annual inflation rate rose to a high of 3.4% in February, 0.6% up on December 2022.
Switzerland focus: Testing the mettle
In the words of Patrik Peyer, managing partner of Niederer Kraft Frey (NKF): ‘As the Swiss legal market confronts these multifaceted challenges, the resilience and adaptability of legal practitioners become crucial in shaping a forward-looking legal landscape.’ ‘The legal market is always developing in parallel to the general economic situation,’ says Bär & Karrer’s Susanne Schreiber, who co-heads the firm’s tax team.

J.K. Rowling Displays Deliberate Ignorance On Trans Issues And Tries To Normalize TERF Ideology
J.K. Rowling has been in the news lately because of her views on transgender people. It began several months ago when Rowling tweeted her support of Maya Forstater. Forstater's contract work was not renewed after she tweeted, "People who I admire . . . are tying themselves in knots to avoid saying the truth that men cannot change into women (because that might hurt mens feelings)." Rowling was back in the news this month when she tweeted more ignorant thoughts about the trans community.
'Religious Freedom' Is No Excuse For Trump To Remove LGBTQ Health Protections
Happy Pride Month, I guess. The Trump administration announced on Friday they would be removing LGBTQ protections in health care and health insurance. These protections were previously enacted by the Obama administration. They will change the definition of "sex discrimination," limiting it only to those facing discrimination for being male or female. It will no longer include discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation.
George Floyd Deserves Justice
Memorial Day is a time to spend reflecting on the fallen heroes who fought for our country's freedom. This year was a time when most people were staying home due to COVID-19. However, there was one person in particular who would leave the safety of his home. He would step out into the big, bad world only to be faced with some of the worst evil our country has dwelling within it.
I Know It's Winter, And I Know I Have Shorts On
Let’s get something straight. I like shorts. Basketball shorts are usually my go-to choice for bottoms each morning. I find them comfortable and I like how I look in them. I have never been completely confident in my own skin, so it is important for me to wear what makes me comfortable. I wear shorts all year-round, even during the winter, which I have found drives people crazy. Each morning I get ready to walk to the gym.

8 College Graduation Gifts They Actually Want
An obvious, and always appreciated, gift to give anyone, especially young professionals, fresh out of college, in a sea of debt, is cash. But for those gift givers who want to think a bit beyond the card-and-cash, look no further. Here are eight gifts that most college grads will want, need, and use. HP and Fujifilm both sell these, and they’re pretty high up on my list of things I would love to buy if I had a few hundred bucks to spare.
Delayed presentation of iatrogenic bladder perforation
A 41-year-old lady presented to a district general hospital with a 24-hour history of abdominal pain, shoulder tip pain and anuria. No other symptoms were reported, and observations were stable. Her medical history included endometriosis, one normal vaginal delivery in 1998 and three caesarean sections dated 2003, 2010 and 2012. On examination, there was tenderness in the suprapubic region and left loin; the bladder was not palpable, and she did not elicit any signs of peritonitis.
