Kingman Council set to finalize sales tax increase at June 16 meeting
Kingman City Council is poised to take the final step to enact plans to increase city sales tax collections, in order to use that money to permanently fund increased road maintenance on city streets. The City Council meeting, starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, will be asked to adopt the proposed ordinance to increase sales tax rates in Kingman. The city is proposing to raise the city sales tax rate by 0.5% - from 2.5% up to 3% - on all purchases of less than $10,000.

A reliable source of water is vital for any community - especially when the community is located in the desert during the middle of a decades-long drought. Kingman’s primary source of water is the Hualapai Valley Groundwater Basin. The basin was designated as an Irrigation Non-Expansion Area several years ago - but that INA designation was successfully challenged and struck down by the courts earlier this year.

Kingman originally sought 1,800 acres of land near the airport to be released from federal regulations, but have since trimmed that down to 790 acres due to cost concerns as the process began to play out.

The Fraternal Order of Police Mohave Lodge 16 hosted its bi-annual memorial service on Wednesday, May 13 honoring Mohave County officers who have died in the line of duty at its monument to fallen officers located in front of the Mohave County Sheriff's Office in Kingman.

Honoring Mohave County’s fallen officers, as a new name is added to somber list
The list of Mohave County law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty is another name longer this year, as the Fraternal Order of Police Mohave Lodge 16 held its bi-annual memorial ceremony in honor of the fallen. The ceremony on May 13 is held as part of Law Enforcement Month in May every even-numbered year since FOP Lodge 16 donated the monument honoring fallen officers from any law enforcement agency in Mohave County in 2022. kAm“%9:D :D 2?

American Red Cross names Kingman resident 'Rookie of the Year' in Northern Arizona
The local American Red Cross Northern Arizona Chapter is just over a year old, but growing fast. During its first year it brought on more than 300 new volunteers and a local man was selected as the best newcomer of them all. Kingman resident John Jackson was selected as the chapters "Rookie of the Year" during a volunteer recognition event on the Northern Arizona University campus in Flagstaff on April 25.
Kingman City Council could adopt notice of intent for proposed sales tax increase on April 6
The Kingman City Council is set to take the first step towards increasing the city sales tax by 0.5% with a public hearing to adopt a notice of intent during its meeting on Tuesday, April 7. If the notice of intent is adopted, that would set up a public hearing on June 16 to officially adopt the increase from 2.5% to 3%. According to city staff, the increase is expected to bring in a total of $5.99 million each year.
Trash and water rate increases come before council this week
Trash and water bills could be increasing in the next few months in Kingman, as the City Council will be asked to adopt a notice of intent to consider the changes at the council’s May 19 meeting. When it comes to solid waste rates, city staff says there is a gap between the amount of money coming in, and the cost to the city to provide the service that needs to be addressed.

Water is a precious resource in Arizona, and without any rights to Colorado River water Kingman’s only source is what lays underground. With concerns over the health of the Hualapai Valley Groundwater Basin sprouting up in recent years the City of Kingman and Mohave County have both been working on projects to ensure that more water is reaching the aquifer.

2025 General Plan proposal headed to Mohave County Board of Supervisors for final approval
The 2025 Mohave County General Plan is one step away from completion after the county Planning and Zoning Commission approved the proposed plan earlier this month. But many Golden Valley residents are still vocally opposing changes made to the proposal in January that allow for a more dense residential development in an area they say should be limited to one acre minimum lots.

Hualapai Valley Groundwater Basin | Farmers: Metered water use is much lower than county estimates
Water use records from the two largest pistachio farms in the Hualapai Valley Groundwater Basin don’t match up with the estimates created by Mohave County in its recently released 2024 study on water use within the basin – and it’s not even close. According to the water estimates used in the study, both farms used more water last year than the City of Kingman’s 8,600 acre-feet – which includes residential, commercial, and municipal water use for roughly 56,000 people.

9 burning questions about Kingman’s groundwater source and its future
A new study looking at Kingman’s primary water source – the Hualapai Valley Groundwater Basin – says that the basin has about 95 years of “water adequacy” remaining. That doesn’t mean the city will be out of water in 100 years, but it would make water more difficult and expensive to provide.
Details released about hazardous material leak Friday that shut down U.S. 93 west of Kingman
More details have been released on the hazmat situation on the side of U.S. 93 Friday evening that led to a full closure of the highway for roughly 12 hours. The situation was caused by a semi-truck transporting Nitric Acid. Arizona Department of Public Safety Public Information Officer Raul Garcia Jr. said a leak was caused by improper securement of 12 bulk plastic totes in the box trailer.
Kingman considering new master plan for Cerbat Cliffs Golf Course
Cerbat Cliffs Golf Course may be in line for a new master plan that could dive into, among other things, water conservation opportunities, course layout, revenue generating opportunities, and the course’s irrigation system. On Monday, June 9, the Kingman Golf Commission voted 6-1 to get the ball rolling on putting together a new master plan for the municipal course. The vote gives city staff the go ahead to start the bid process to look for an architect to do the work.
Remembering the fallen on Memorial Day in Kingman
For many, Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer and provides a welcome three-day weekend. But Kingman area veterans came together to mark the true reason for the holiday – remembering the many U.S. Military members who have given their lives over the past 250 years. The Kingman Marine Corps League Detachment 887 started the day off with their annual ceremony in Veterans Memorial Park downtown with about 50 people.
Groundwater resolution for Hualapai Basin tabled by Supervisors pending upcoming report
Kingman’s primary water source, the Hualapai Valley Groundwater Basin, is currently designated as an irrigation non-expansion area – commonly referred to as an INA. But as water issues throughout Arizona and the west become more pronounced there has been efforts to create new groundwater protections specifically for rural areas. The City of Kingman has been pushing to protect its basin for the past several years, and Mohave County is currently considering lending its support.
