Abstract Soil organic carbon (SOC) comprises particulate (POC) and mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC), which differ in formation, stabilization, and loss mechanisms. While the current global distribution of POC and MAOC is characterized, their vulnerability under future climate scenarios remains unclear.

P66 is a bacterial mimic of CD47 that binds the anti-phagocytic receptor SIRPα and facilitates macrophage evasion by Borrelia burgdorferi

Apr 30, 2024 |
By Michal Caspi Tal, Paige Hansen, Haley A. Ogasawara, Qingying Feng
| biorxiv.org
Abstract Innate immunity, the first line of defense against pathogens, relies on efficient elimination of invading agents by phagocytes. In the co-evolution of host and pathogen, pathogens developed mechanisms to dampen and evade phagocytic clearance. Here, we report that bacterial pathogens can evade clearance by macrophages through mimicry at the mammalian anti-phagocytic signaling axis between CD47 (ligand) and SIRPα (receptor).

SCGB1D2 inhibits growth of Borrelia burgdorferi and affects susceptibility to Lyme disease - Nature Communications

Mar 18, 2024 |

Abstract Lyme disease is a tick-borne disease caused by bacteria of the genus Borrelia. The host factors that modulate susceptibility for Lyme disease have remained mostly unknown. Using epidemiological and genetic data from FinnGen and Estonian Biobank, we identify two previously known variants and an unknown common missense variant at the gene encoding for Secretoglobin family 1D member 2 (SCGB1D2) protein that increases the susceptibility for Lyme disease.

SIRPα controls CD47-dependent platelet clearance in mice and humans

Dec 10, 2023 |
By Ying Yiu, Paige Hansen, Maia Shoham, Aanya Subramaniam
| biorxiv.org
Abstract Over the last decade, more data has revealed that increased surface expression of the "don't eat me" CD47 protein on cancer cells plays a role in immune evasion and tumor progression, with CD47 blockade emerging as a new therapy in immuno-oncology. CD47 is critical in regulating cell homeostasis and clearance, as binding of CD47 to the inhibitory receptor SIRPα can prevent phagocytosis and macrophage-mediated cell clearance.

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea and bacteria differentially contribute to ammonia oxidation in soil under precipitation gradients and land legacy

Nov 12, 2023 |
By Soumyadev Sarkar, Anna Kazarina, Paige Hansen, Kaitlyn Ward

Abstract Global change has accelerated the nitrogen cycle. Soil nitrogen stock degradation by microbes leads to the release of various gases, including nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas. Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) participate in the soil nitrogen cycle, producing N2O.

Farmers are good to Delta’s Farm Roots Mini School

Farmers are good people. My job often keeps me inside but when I venture outside, there always seems to be a farmer standing in the field with one of our teachers. We’re in the midst of putting in a crop right now. The goal, as a school community, is to contribute to the food security of the families in our district. But none of this would be possible without the Delta farmers that have come together to support us.

On the last day before school let out for spring break, I walked into the common room at Farm Roots Mini School and reminded the kids how to properly wash their hands. They rolled their collective teenage eyes at me. And then I turned and said to them, “Do you know who is going to become increasingly important if this pandemic goes on?” There was a palpable pause in the room followed by a ripple of pride. They knew the answer: farmers.

In 2015, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will ask state lawmakers to change the rules so it can charter its own schools and provide traditional public schools with some of the flexibility charters get. "Certainly, I'm keenly interested in us being able to play by the same rules as a charter schools," said Ann Clark, CMS' deputy acting superintendent. Unlike traditional public schools, charters do not have to follow all the same state rules.

Butternut is such a stereotypical fall food, but sometimes stereotypes are there for a reason. Am I right? Butternut is amazing. I love it mixed into creamy risotto, embedded in delicate ravioli, roasted with herbs like rosemary or sage, but mostly, I love it in soup. This recipe is different from the traditional butternut squash soups you see this time of year. It is made with miso broth, fresh ginger, cayenne and coconut milk.
