What I Learned From Being Screamed At By a Parent
After 5 years of teaching, it finally happened. My Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah-ing, rose-gold glasses-wearing-self was yelled at by an irate, unhinged parent. Out in a courtyard. In front of both faculty members and parents alike. I won’t get into the nitty-gritty of WHY I was screamed at after school because (quite honestly) I still don’t really know. All I know is that it was such an out-of-body, bizarre experience that I am still trying to wrap my head around it.

‘My child wants to be an architect. Why does she have to take GCSE RE?’
Sarah* wants to be an architect. She has always shown an eye for design, and her strongest subjects are in art, science and computing. So when it came time to select her GCSE options, she wanted to make the most of her opportunity. We supported her in choosing subjects that would strengthen her path into architecture, a competitive and demanding profession, by focusing on both creative and technical GCSEs. But then we were told she must take GCSE Religious Education. This came as a surprise.

5 Adult Habits That Show You Didn't Get The Love You Need From Your Parents
The truth is, it’s painful to see all the subtle behaviors that people tend to display when their parents only showed them love when they did whatever their parents asked them to. The kids who grew up on a diet of conditional love didn’t do anything to deserve it. It’s their parents’ fault. However, that doesn’t mean that they can’t lead fulfilling lives later on. I know because I’ve seen it in a lot of the people I know. It’s not just one little thing.
Parents Who Raise Mentally Weak Kids Accidentally Use These 6 Innocent Phrases Way Too Often
Parenting is all at once the best, worst, most challenging, most rewarding, most frustrating, and most joyous job an adult can ever have. However, as humans, we frequently respond to our kids based on the variances of circumstances, their actions or behaviors as well as our own state of being — physically, mentally, or emotionally.
7 Phrases You Should Never Say To Someone Who Had A Rough Childhood
One of my friends was a product of severe neglect in her home. Her parents didn’t give her many toys, didn’t hug her, and any affection she had was conditional on who was around to watch her get showered in it. We’re going to call her Lisa*. Lisa is an amazing human being who has gone through a lot to get the family she always wanted. While her parents never came around, she has a loving partner, a kid, and tons of pets. For the most part, Lisa is chill.
Are Your Parents The Problem? 7 Habits That Mean It Might Be Time To Cut Ties
Lately, I’ve been going on Reddit to see what the major drama is for other peoples’ relationships. It’s where I get a lot of my inspiration as a writer, and it’s also a way to gauge where society is at this time. I mean, every time women’s rights get rolled back, I notice an uptick in DV posts. Regardless, I noticed a lot of people talking about situations that were highly dysfunctional in their families.
If Your Parents Did These 7 Things You Can Blame Them For Being Bad At Adulting
Kids are, by definition, emotionally immature. They have not yet had an opportunity to learn how to recognize their feelings, manage them, take responsibility for them, or use them the way they are meant to be used. That's normal. But then you grew up and now feel like you missed the memo on how to be a functioning adult. From budgeting disasters to never knowing what to say in tough conversations, “adulting” can feel like an uphill battle.
10 Signs You Were Raised In A Troubling Low-Effort Family And It's Affecting You Now
If you grew up in a healthy home, you likely remember the love and support you had. Parents who did their best to teach and understand you tend to produce happier adults who go on to have good relationships. But on the flip side, there are specific signs you were raised in a troubling "low-effort" family and it's affecting you now years afterwards.
3 Hints Your Mom Might Need A Crash Course in Emotional Maturity, According To A Toxic Parenting Recovery Coach
Some of us are lucky enough to consider our moms as one of our biggest cheerleaders, fiercest protectors, and best friends. She is someone we know we can rely on for a shoulder to cry on during life’s toughest moments, a hand to hold on to during the highlights of our lives, and just a person we can comfortably dish with. Unfortunately for others, their mothers are their biggest nightmare.
6 Childhood Moments A Trauma Therapist Wishes She Could Bottle Up For Every Kid
Our childhood can make or break us — and nobody knows this better than childhood trauma therapist Morgan Pommells. Sometimes trauma isn't about what happened — it's about what didn't. When we think of childhood trauma we probably imagine a child who has experienced unimaginable abuse throughout their life. And yes, that's one form of childhood trauma. However, there is another form of trauma not as widely recognized — the trauma of what didn't happen.
The 7 Choices That Actually Make A Difference When Raising ADHD Kids, According To A Specialist
According to the Centers for Disease Control, 7 million U.S. children aged 3–17 have been diagnosed with ADHD. When you're raising one of these unique, wonderful children, it can be hard to know exactly what will help when they're struggling. Do old-school standards apply or do you need a new set of rules? From what I've seen in my practice, a unique combination of both works best.
