The luxury smartwatch scene looks very different today versus a decade or so ago. Back then, there was a rush from traditional watchmakers to grab a slice of the smartwatch pie, but most have quietly withdrawn and refocused their attention on their core offering. The technology was erratic and too often it proved a terrible value proposition for consumers. Plus, brands like Apple, Samsung, and Garmin did the crucial ‘tech’ bit so much better and cheaper anyway.

Christopher Ward has debuted its COSC-certified Calibre CW-002 movement with the unveiling of its new flagship, the C63 Sealander True GMT. This watershed moment for the British brand marks the end of a three-year journey to develop a proprietary GMT movement. “With off-the-shelf, Swiss, True GMT movements unavailable to us, it became clear that developing a new in-house movement was the smoothest way forward—or so we thought,” said CEO and co-founder, Mike France.

Seiko reinterprets a 60s classic

Seiko has today grown its Prospex collection with two new releases inspired by a 1968 classic. Both new models are reimaginings of their Marinemaster watch and include specifications like 300 metre water resistance. The first variant was made in collaboration with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and inspired by the research vessel Mirai II. It features limited edition blue colouring and a textured dial designed to look like a path through polar ice.
