Late last year, The New York Times published a guest essay titled, “An Act of Witness in Appalachia.” It describes photographer Maddie McGarvey’s relationship with Paige Casto and her family. McGarvey was a sophomore studying photojournalism at Ohio University 15 years ago when she decided to document grandparents raising their grandchildren.

Throughout the course of the year, West Virginia Public Broadcasting reporters and producers may create hundreds of stories. There are news “spots” that run less than a minute, “super spots” that go under two minutes. Then there are features and interviews. They all serve a purpose when they are broadcast – to inform or to educate on what’s happening in our state. And every one of them is important. But some are favorites.
