Proteklog vikenda navršilo se pet godina otkako su se talibani vratili na vlast u Afganistanu. Tokom tih pet godina veliki dio zapadnog svijeta prema talibanima je provodio politiku neangažiranja, zasnovanu na pretpostavci da će izolacija stvoriti pritisak koji će ih natjerati na promjene u pitanjima poput ljudskih prava, a posebno prava i sloboda žena. Ne samo da se to nije dogodilo nego je takav pristup nametnuo i ogromnu cijenu običnim građanima.

Last weekend, marked five years since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan. For five years, much of the Western world has pursued a policy of non-engagement toward the Taliban, premised on the assumption that isolation would generate pressure for change on issues such as human rights particularly the rights and freedoms of women. Not only has this not materialized, but the approach has also imposed a severe cost on ordinary citizens.

The End of a Lucrative Deal After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, most EU countries cut off their imports of Russian crude oil. The Kremlin needed alternative destinations for its primary export and offered India discounts of $20–$25 per barrel in comparison to the internationally-set Brent Crude index. As a result, Russia’s share of Indian oil imports rose – despite continuing high freight costs – from a pre-war average of 2 percent to 39 percent by 2023.
