A large, international team of scientists has determined that one in ten butterfly species globally has shifted its distribution range, with climate change and extreme weather driving nearly 80 percent of documented movements. The study, the largest of its kind, includes analyses of 6,182 range‑shift records for 1,758 species across 105 countries, drawing on English and non‑English scientific literature as well as 68 expert assessments.

Abstract Global changes are leading to widespread species redistribution. Comprehensive assessments of range shift dynamics and their drivers are difficult, partly due to the variation in range shift detection over space and taxa. Here we compile documented range shift records for 1,758 butterfly species from 105 countries and territories, representing ~10% of the known diversity of these insects.

The Life Cycle of Butterflies and Moth Species

Akito Kawahara explained that every insect within Lepidoptera undergoes a remarkable process known as complete metamorphosis. This transformation consists of four distinct stages: egg, caterpillar larva, pupa, and winged adult. During the larval stage, caterpillars feed heavily on plant foliage to gain energy for their growth. Once fully grown, butterfly caterpillars form a protective chrysalis where their adult features, such as wings and antennae, fully develop.
