Abstract Global changes are leading to widespread species redistribution. Comprehensive assessments of range shift dynamics and their drivers are difficult, partly due to the variation in range shift detection over space and taxa. Here we compile documented range shift records for 1,758 butterfly species from 105 countries and territories, representing ~10% of the known diversity of these insects.

Biodiversity Information Science and Standards, Aug 2023 Global Registry of Scientific Collections, or GRSciColl, is a comprehensive registry of natural history collections maintained by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), building upon previous efforts developed by the Consortium of the Barcode of Life (CBOL) and other organizations. Its primary purpose is to provide a centralized platform for accessing information on institutions, their collections and associated staff members.

Highlights • Butterfly phylogenetic diversity (PD) is highest in the warmest, wettest areas • Areas with historically stable temperatures have high relative PD (RPD) • The relationship of plant and butterfly RPD is weak and spatially structured • North American warm deserts have high endemism, making it a conservation priority Summary Broad-scale, quantitative assessments of insect biodiversity and the factors shaping it remain particularly poorly explored.
